I always have cruise control fitted for another reason. That's because I forget that I'm in a speed camera detection area, Now I set it just as soon as I see the signs. Both of mine still work at a bit below 30 mph if I drop a couple of gears. Having had 9 points on me licence for nearly 3 years, (got them all in three weeks, now clear). I would have got nabbed a couple more times without it. With Spec's camera's especially they are a god send. Looked them up on the net, and they don't save any more fuel, as I would have expected. They tend to labour the engine up hills a bit more but are a lot more relaxing. Al in all, worth every penny.

It's not the speed control that's important - it's being able to go in the back and put the kettle on...

for me this could be a serious consideration if it was proven to increase the fuel comsumption on my 2.8 turbo diesel.
our new car has cruise control and is more economic as long as the cruise control is used as much as possible even on short runs but we do live in the sticks so runs are longer . any one with a positive feed back ?

I think that the economy is mainly gained by the fact it will make minute adjustments to increase or decrease your speed. When we drive we tend to move our foot up and down too far and waste fuel.

Hi,
We have an Auto-trail on a merc sprinter base, bought it because I wanted an auto gearbox, (never understood especially in town why people want to be pressing pedals and moving a stick around) it also had cruise control, wow both together are fantastic. Have to say it`s the best cruise control system I have ever had, make long journeys so relaxing and the cab a pleasant place to be. Well recommended. |

I fitted one to my vw 2002 T4 2.5 tdi a few months back, ordered the new indicator stalk with the c/c buttons from the vw main dealer for about £45. fitted it myself (it came with full instructions, very easy to do, took about 15mins to fit) plugged the extra plug into the vacant socket on the existing dashboard wiring loom and that was the fitting done!
All i had to do then was take it back to the main dealer( i'd parked in a layby just down the road to fit the stalk) for them to plug in their computor to the ECU and "switch on cruise control" - that took half hour and they also checked all the settings on the ecu. - cost £20. Most useful on a long run, money well spent i think. Found a copy of the fitting instructions here. http://www.vwdriver.ru/storage/108.pdf Note; Some early t4's have a accelerator cable. this retrofit c/c only works with the later "fly by wire" electronic accelerator Last edited by twosugars; 23-02-2010 at 09:39 AM.
