We have now had agreement off the owner of The Anchor Pub in Tintern to use his field again. We are more than welcome to use it.

The Anchor near Tintern, Chepstow - Google Maps (http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=The+Anchor+near+Tintern,+Chepstow&sll=53.800651,-4.064941&sspn=12.791842,38.759766&ie=UTF8&hq=The+Anchor&hnear=Tintern,+Chepstow,+UK&ll=51.697885,-2.678304&spn=0.006211,0.018926&t=h&z=16)

I told him some might arrive on the Friday with various vans coming & going over the weekend, possibly until Tuesday 1st June.

I suggest we eat in the pub on the sat night? Afterall, we're using the field & water for free and it would be a gesture of goodwill from us.

Bob & I will be arriving Saturday after lunch! I'll bring a 5lb pack of bacon & some rolls for Sunday brekkie for everyone ok?
Anyone got a Gas BBQ like Girafes had, to cook it on?

The Forest sounds like a good idea. Cannop Ponds, Wenchford or Mallards Pike should be able to accommodate several vans (although parking at the latter is chargeable and there's likely to be a warden on duty on a BH).

Possibly better than a layby (are there any Forest byelaws restricting these...?!)

Ross-on-Wye is a good place to live. I have my eye on the riverside field behind our house - campers arrive on many summer weekends but I'm not sure whether it's official or otherwise. (Any thoughts, Wyn, if you're following this??)

Re the BBQ, I think the plan is to choose someone as quiet and secluded as it's possible to be on a Bank Holiday weekend. So far, Sunday's forecast is for dry weather and about 18 deg so the crowds are likely to be out in force.

bellys
26-05-2010, 22:15
dry weather = heaving at wenchford...if ur wanting peace and quiet its not the place to go...let me rest my brain cell overnight :D...i will have a think in the morning on somehwere u could go round here...how many vans roughly?

kangooroo
26-05-2010, 22:23
Judging by the list, I'd say about 10 vans (including your four). Mine is an adapted car so doesn't need much space - but I'll probably have to leave before the BBQ as I have a lot of hungry furry mouths to feed.

Speculation should be quiet but I'm not sure there'd be space? Or New Fancy - which always seems to be empty and those who do visit tend to leave within 20 minutes after checking out the viewpoint. If not for the BH then it could be suitable on another occasion. This must be very close to you...?

bellys
26-05-2010, 22:28
we won't be attending the drive around/bbq-ing...we will be arriving at tintern around 12 ish with the others arriving after that....

we live about 5 mins from wenchford so all the places you have mentioned we are very local to us

speculation might be ok, as u say peeps just go for the view then leave fairly quickly ..i suspect mallards will be busy..plus u have to pay to get in now unless u park up over the road...

i repeat.... understand that the field will be occupied by cricketers from 1pm till 7.30 pm

they will cause damage to your van if you insist on staying...

me and anyone else with any sense will be gone for the afternoon...by 12.30 latest...

Dunno if this is any use for the peeps wanting to somewhere to go on Sunday for a BBQ....i nipped doen to Lydney Harbour today...if u go right to the bottom of the road..watch the speed humps ..there short and high...anyway there is enough parking for about 5- 6 vans...hard standing...clean..the view is quite nice...no wow factor but nice.

See you all Sunday :)

- and there's ample 'overflow' parking outside adjacent to the canal by the industrial units.

It's a nice spot for a wander with the added interest of the harbour, lock, views, sunken barges and local history. I'm not sure how popular a barbecue would be with other visitors on a BH afternoon though....?!!

The larger parking bays at New Fancy would be more discreet and less likely to be in the way of any other visitors and there is shade incase the weather's warm like today. But, there's not a lot to do there once you've been up to the viewpoint.

Lydney Harbour... have you actually been there recently?!!! Anyone expecting fleets of fishing trawlers will be sadly disappointed but it's a nice little spot.

As for eating poo - that can be arranged. How many sacks? Guaranteed warm, fresh and lightly fragrant... :D

Hi,
You'll be very welcome to join us. Some are already there.
If you scroll back through the pages, there is a link to the google map.
But its "the Anchor pub" in Tintern. Right opposite Tintern Abbey.

Hope to see you there!

Check the entrance as i think you will stuggle to get in the back of the pub with a large unit but if you check out A.J's birthday bash we were there then and theres a link to google map and a couple of pics of the entrance off the main rd which you will get down.

A lovely location and great company (those whom we managed to meet!).....however, a few of you knew that when we started to cook our meal, we found that the gas tank ran out... (thank heavens for salad!)

This has never, ever happened over all the years as motorhomers as we fill up a one of the motorhome shows on a regular basis and were about to fill up at the imminent Stratford show.....!! We must have cooked too much in recent months!??

The problem was not getting gas (they had gas in nearby Alvington but NO connector.....we only have a connector for Europe (they are not required at the "shows"....;) We travelled from one place to another, phoned loads etc, asked an AA man but no joy....!! Tried internet too...

We ended up close to home in our search and we knew that this company did have a connector (but no longer did... :o and this, sadly, is where we are now. :(

Have a lovely time folks (thanks to AJ for trying to help us save our fridge full of food....for the BBQ too) and kind regards to Kangooroo and hope to see you before too long....Love, Ana and Paul xx
ps our eldest and naughty yorkie, Gypsy Rose hopes that you enjoyed the entertainment she laid on for you on Friday....!!!

Don't get excited - my steam-operated, strung-together 'puter hasn't wanted to play today and it's taken 3 hours just to link 4 short, simple clips. Because it's public, I've rendered it deliberately in very low resolution to ensure number plates are not readable - but you'll get the general idea.... (A higher-res version is available - just send a PM if you'd like the link.)

You're forgiven. Most people seem to have assumed I'm a bloke!

Actually, the van you're referring to is not mine - it's Dave Catherall's with trendily-dressed, passenger Katbit who waves at fellow campers!!! My buns are true lagomorphs.

As for fashion-conscious model AJ, all I can say is that my camera loved him, but not necessarily for the right reasons! ;)
