Hello everybody,

Looking to go the peak district (first time) in two weeks time for 2 nights. Is Monsal Head still ok? and can anybody give me anymore information?
We are only in a normal van with an airbed and need some outside space to eat etc, we also have a dog so we don't just want a layby - can anyone suggest another spot for a stopover for the following night

Monsal Head is still fine - you can stay in the car park behind the hotel. Stayed there a couple of weeks ago! Another lovely spot nearby is Longstone Edge (signposted from Great Longstone just down the road from Monsal Head). Other places include the car park at Millers Dale, the main car park at Castleton, car park of The Black Horse Pub at Hulland Ward near Ashbourne, car park at Hathersage. Any other info you want just ask - I lived there for 15 years so know the area well!

Hi Again Rach,

Sorry, I didn't mean Millers Dale - wrong dale! If you have a dog and only have a couple of days and like walking I'd go the Longstone Edge route. It is only laybys, but I stayed there three weeks ago and in a 24 hour period only two cars drove past - our dog was outside loose all the time. You can also quite literally walk straight from your van onto the Derbyshire Moors and Dales and keep going pretty much as long as you want.

As I said in my previous post, if you're looking at somewhere specific for a second day, let me know and I'll find you a place to stay!

Try Cromford or Matlock Bath, however Cromford is nicer as it is a Picnic area as well as parking. Nice little walk or cycle along the towpath.

Hope this helps

Monsal Head is beautiful...went there on the 1st August. We had the whole car park to ourselves and there was a pub (hotel) and public toilet block at the bottom of the carpark. We had a picnic table right outside of the van too. I think it cost us 30p for the night...I need to check that.
Im going to write a new thread on Peak district.
