Is it safe to stay overnight in motorhome aires when travelling in Spain?
We are going to the northern part near Santander.

We have stayed on aires in the northern part of Spain & found no problem, we felt safe enough but it is always a personal matter as to whether you would feel safe. We always prefer it if there is somebody else there & try to have a chat to them or even just a wave. Have a look at the place you are staying if there are loads of bottles & cans about it could be a meeting place for locals that comes alive after dark & can be noisy. Unless you are a 100% sure that you won't be disturbed or have problems have the van ready to move at short notice if possible without having to go outside & always make sure you can't be blocked in. Get into the habit of locking & alarming your van, never assume that you won't have a problem (the old saying 'trust in god but keep your powder dry')

We nearly always wildcamp or use aires & although we have had the odd few uncomfortable nights (sometimes noisy youngsters partying through the night) we have never actually had any problem apart from somebody once banging on the side of the van)

Have a look at this link STOPPING PLACES (http://www.furgovw.org/mapa_furgoperfecto.php) if you zoom in & click on the info it takes you to a forum (in Spanish) but you can post the URL into GOOGLE TRANSLATE (http://translate.google.com/#) & you can read info about the place.

The aires in Spain are as safe as the aires in any country
Have a look here

Agree, plenty of safe places in Spain, particularly inland and away from the tourist spots.

I agree with all the above but a word of caution: the motorways between France and Spain are hotspots for thieves. If you are going to get robbed anywhere (and remember it is not a high probability) it is likely to be on these motorways. For that reason I would recommend the aires off the motorways. There are quite a few in northern Spain - they can be found on websites such as CAMPINGCAR-INFOS (http://www.campingcar-infos.com) which is a French site but also covers aires all over Europe, including Spain. Also, check out the Spaish forum on this website for lots of other possible aires/wildcamps. Happy travels.
