Can anyone recommend any good spots in this area please?

Hi and welcome. I've not used it myself but there are free spaces for motorhomes in an otherwise paying car park at Argentiere which is about 5 miles northeast of Chamonix. There is an aire in Chamonix itself but it costs 12 euros per night! For more details on these and other possibilities look up CAMPINGCAR-INFOS (http://www.campingcar-infos.com) and happy travels.

I spent 2 winter seasons in vans around Cham (got a chalet for most of it though!). I have just updated my personal map which includes a few spots around Cham..
Snowrat Sleeping Spots (http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF&msa=0&msid=212823784102807363888.0004a27919b6bbca549c9)
Hopefully the link will work, let me know if you need further information, spent a lot of time there.
All the main car parks at the ski lifts are also a good option to try.
Had to get things fixed several times down in Sallanche too so know where to find most things needed around Cham. Auto electrician 'Lionel Bas tard' (space needed to get past the web police!) is always helpful, and yes that is his real name :) but you can trust him.

My first post also btw!

If you want squalor, then Snells Field used to be good but I don't know if they take Motorhomes. I lived out of the back of an A35 van there
I don't know if it is still in business either but it was a riot :)
