Another good place for staying when visiting a steam railway is the small pull-in car park bay on the approach road to Horsted Keynes Station. The Green Man pub is a decent walk away but well worth it for the excellent beer and grub.

Actually, I heartily recommend that you contact the Bluebell Railway for premission to camp on the field overlooking the station. We were charged £3 per night (all in) and given the key to the station to use their toilet and shower.
You get to stand on the station platform after everyone has gone, with the clock ticking you back in time. Incredible. And you wake to watch the engines being steamed up for the day's work. This is a must for any steam, or retro enthusiast. Take some chocks though as there is a bit of a slope over the whole field, but hey; no slope no view. :)
