Despite only about 3 hrs sleep the night before, and feeling shattered all day yesterday, by 10 pm last night I was bouncing and couldn't unwind so it was about 2am before I fell asleep last night. Luckily the 3 alarms I set for this morning have worked and I am up but feeling like I could now sleep for a week. Hopefully today's training course won't be too boring as it will be very tempting to go and have 40 winks in the Tranny - got to take the Tranny cos of flat battery in the Peugeot Partner. But chilly and icy here so that should wake me up when I go and de-ice the windscreen.

Hope you got on OK at the dentist, not good news any day, not just Friday 13th! I went just before Christmas and she couldn't find anything wrong so decided to give them a good clean - so thorough that I felt as if all my teeth were coming loose! :D

Glad the dentist wasn't too bad - the ooohaaah injections sound awful!!!! Wouldn't be so bad if they had done some good.
My 13th wasn't too bad except I decided to make some pies with the mincemeat I had left over from Christmas. Got the pastry ready, cut out and into the tins then I discovered I couldn't get the lid off the jar of mincemeat so they had to wait until my husband got home. I had a little rubber grippy mat for opening jars but it seems to have disappeared. Its so annoying when you can't do things.
Hope you have a good night.

At last, a good undisturbed 11 hours sleep, much much needed. Now I just got to shift my circadian rhythm so that I go to sleep at a normal time and wake up at a normal time instead of going to sleep in the wee small hours, and then wasting the morning and not waking up till nearly lunchtime.

i awake again early feeling better than yesterday

Glad you were feeling better this morning. Not a bad day here really, some nice sunshine.
Wish I could give you some of my sleeping in exchange for some of your wakefulness. Amongst other things, I have chronic anaemia, which means I'm always tired and I'm forever falling asleep when I would rather be getting on with things! Wish we could both have a happy medium! Although funnily enough I often wake up in the wee small hours but wouldn't dare get up as that would wake the dogs and they would wake my husband and he has to be up early for work.

well if i am having bad week the use sleeping bag with a liner that way it goe from settee to bed and back again only liner to wash and means i dont have to make the bed which is a pain chuck hot water bottle in sleping bag it then warm to get into to and dont wake up cold where i lost the duvet after fighing with it as there only me at least iget all the duvet when i use it not having to share it is one good thing dont wake up with a cold b** where the du vet been pinched lol

Me too, although its not v comfy on my 2 seater settee, either my legs go numb curled up underneath me or else feet get cold hanging over the arm. But when it's as cold as it is at the moment, it's just too cold to sleep upstairs, so quite often I get the camping mat and sleeping bag out and sleep on the floor in front of the stove. Minus 10C here last night and same forecast for tonight, ice on inside of the window this morning, didn't melt till lunchtime. Brrrr!!!

Sometimes I find I'm tired so I go to bed, but then I can't sleep so I put the light on and read, then I feel myself getting sleepy and eyes closing, so I close my book, take off specs, put light off and then suddenly I'm wide awake again

So I've got cheap reading specs and low energy light and just let myself fall asleep reading now. Neighbours must be curious as to why my bedroom light is on at all times of the night.

Doc gave me some sleeping tabs but if I take one I can't get up in the morning  Am getting back into my old owl habits again, not going to bed till silly time in the morning, too wide awake, it's a hard habit to break. Sometimes I'm so tired I can sleep through 3 alarms, other times I wake up after only a couple of hours sleep and can't get back off to sleep so have to get up. Like last night. Only got about 3 hours last night, been knackered all day, and gave in and had half hour nap earlier, I could have easily slept longer but then I wouldn't get to sleep this evening. Still feeling tired so hopefully the nap won't keep me awake tonight.

I'd rather wash & dry my sleeping bag than do battle with changing the duvet cover, a job I hate. I have even gone back to a single duvet cos changing double duvet cover winds me up so bad, I always get all the corners wrong and then it ends up twisted and it takes ages...

My microwave slippers and bean bags are a god send, they're the one thing I miss when I'm camping. Hot water bottle is fine but not as quick and easy as microwave beanies and you can't get hot water bottles that you can wear on your feet!

Ditto. And as soon as I finally get comfy and start drifting off, then the dog starts doing the same! He sleeps under my bed and so the whole bed shakes when he does his turning round and round thing.

I keep my down sleeping bag for camping and use the cheap easy to wash and dry ones in the house - the one's you recommended from Tesco are just the job, and unzipped they double up as an extra blanket on the bed when it's cold.

The dog usually ends up on the bed anyway, he waits till I'm asleep and then sneaks up and lies at my feet. I don't really mind, it keeps them warm.

Midday and it's still minus 2C here (minus 10C again last night) although the sun is out and it's a lovely blue sky day, my favourite kind of winter day. Too cold to work on the Tranny today, I was going to put a second layer of insulation on the roof but I think it's too cold to use the spray glue. But I'm going to get the sledge out and dusted off ready for some snow tomorrow and I might give the Tranny a run out to keep the battery topped up.

Hope you're managing to keep warm, and that it's a lovely blue sky day for you too

I'm afraid I do the owl thing. It's a bad habit to get into but I can't seem to help it. If I go through a period of a few days where I don't have to go to work, I soon start reverse sleeping. I tend to sleep from about 5am to midday and there it stays. Talk about getting up with the sunrise, I go to to bed with the sunrise!

Anyway I never did like mornings. It's much more pleasant to wake up to a nice warm afternoon.:rockroll:

Frustrating isn't it when you've got all the kit and the time to do a job, but can't get on with it cos it's too cold to do it :mad2:
Never mind, in my case there are plenty of other jobs which need doing and I can't use the weather as an excuse not to do them.

Plenty of sleep for me the past 2 nights but not a very good sleeping pattern, finally getting to sleep about 3am, then sleeping through alarms and not waking till 11am. As Firefox says, it's so easy to slip into a routine which isn't good when you need to be able to get up in the morning. Lucky for me, alot of my work at the moment is from home, but I do need to get this sleep problem sorted in the next month or so as once my training course finishes in March I'm going to be having to get up at "sparrow's fart" to drive to venues to deliver training courses to other people.

What training are you hoping to deliver?

I'm doing a specialist Mental Health Awareness Train the Trainers course at the moment, sponsored by NHS, in return for sponsorship I have to deliver 2 x 3 day courses later this year (no dates yet), once I've done that I can work freelance anywhere in the country. There are no other trainers in Cumbria so the 12 people on my course will be the only ones and very few in Northumberland, N Yorkshire, Lancashire etc so I've been told there'll be plenty of work but will involve travelling. May even get regular work further afield - our trainers are travelling from Nottingham to Cumbria and are also delivering courses in Newcastle at the moment. The National Governing Body for the training is based in London so I can foresee regular trips down there.

Also hoping to get on Mental Health First Aid Trainers course and Suicide Prevention training courses in near future if the organisations I do voluntary work for can source funding to cover the (substantial) costs - £2k+

Firefox

Part of my problem is I don't do regular hours.

My "normal" 3 day a week pattern is sleep from 4 to 9 or 9.30. Into work about 10 or 10.30. You may think that is is easy, but I don't finish work till 7 or 8 in the evening. Then the other two days a week I have to go to an early meeting in London or elsewhere and get up at 5, 6, or 7 in the morning.

At the moment I don't have any problem waking up at a stupid time if I have to. I just set the alarm or tell myself I have to be up and my body clock will wake me up at that time. I don't know how this works but it seems to.

Say I work 10am till 8pm Thursday and up at 6am on Friday for a meeting or meetings that last 12 hours on Friday so not back till 7pm Friday night. I reach the van near railway station and go straight to bed. Wake up 1am Sat. Do shopping and surf the net for 4 hours, Then back to bed 5am and sleep till 10am sat morning ... that's how life goes on. There is no day or night. Just work, sleep, and food.

I'm sure this lifestyle is not good for general well being, and I don't know how long I can last doing it. The van allows me to grab 6 hours sleep, toilet and meals in side streets, in between odd work hours. This is why I don't understand why people need all these aires, car parks, and "approved" places. Just turn up, sleep, eat and leave. There's more free parking in the UK than you think.

Slept well last night until the dog needed to go out at 6.30. So much better waking up when the weather is +6 at that time of the morning. No snow here- bliss. I love the white stuff on the mountains but not in my back yard.

The dry cold we had last week was much better than the usual wet cold for the joints. Can't wait for the warmer weather, all 2 weeks of it.

Judging by the past two or three years, May-June will be the best time to go away in the UK.

Either I slept through 3 alarms or else for some reason they didn't go off. I ended up being only 10 mins later than my revised ETA at my friends which is about normal for me, although some of the errands have had to be put off till tomorrow.

But the important things got done - we had a good walk out on the fells after lunch, I got a new tyre to replace the punctured one (which was knackered as I must have driven a fair way on it whilst it was flat without realising) so I now can drive without worrying about not having a spare, and I got a plyboard table top for on top of the dog's cage in the Tranny cut to size at the sawmill. Just need to decide whether to varnish or wax it or whether to cover it in the same flowery sticky back plastic that I used for my deluxe loo seat.

Also arranged for some time next week to help the friend I visited, who lives in the middle of nowhere with 12 acres of land and who was widowed unexpectedly last year after 30 years of one of the best marriages I've ever seen, to saw up a tree which is down, in return for some logs :D
That should keep me in hot baths for a good few weeks. It's a dead ash so can be burned straightaway more or less.

A good day although I'm pretty tired now and the dog has put himself straight to bed as soon as we got home after romping miles on the fells with his collie friends.

I bet I wake naturally early tomorrow when I'd be quite happy to sleep in as my elec is going to be off all day. At least I can brew up in the Tranny but will have to have a whole day without internet access :scared:

There was only ten minute or less from the time i got up till u went to bed, left you a nursery ryhmme which wasnt bad for me considring i hadnt been up that long, glad you had a good afternoon wish i was capable of a good romp across the fell think it would take me ages would do it but would know about later but aint going to stop me. Cover it in sticky back plastic that way it wipes clean and if you spill red wine on it it wont stain that. The firewood will come in handy ,will have to find the picture of my coffee on sat morning i thought was funny. Not to worry about electric being off you still can work on lappy ,and use woodburner to cook on so not that drastic and get jobs done that dont require electric just the sweat on your brow, in my case that is thinking lol

Hopefully it'll be dry tomorrow and I can get the new gaskets for the whirly bird air vents in the Tranny fitted, and do some more insulating. It's not had a run out for a couple of weeks so I think I'll go for a drive and do some dog training on the common - I need to get him to jump a 9 foot long jump, I know he can physically do it when there's a tennis ball at the far end of it, but without the tennis ball as incentive he jumps about 3 foot and then trots disinterestedly over the rest of it. And in the competition in 10 days time, we won't be allowed to use tennis balls as encouragement. So I have to pretend that I have a tennis ball, but he's not buying it... :(

Am going to have to get on with a fair bit of online work tonight seeing as how I've got an unexpected day off tomorrow :(

How did you get on at the hospital? Were they nice to you or was it a bit brutal?

Am not convinced that's it for the day so have reboiled a full kettle of water.

Better to be told you'd be off for the day then find it's only 5 mins, than told it's 5 mins and it lasting all day!!!

Sleep is a strange thing, if my Girls have a Gig that's a long way from home ie driving through the night, you can guarantee that on the morning of the gig I'll wake up at about 4.30am. It can be a long day and I'm not good at sleeping through the day!

Good luck WVW with the dog training, I made some scaling walls for our local dog training group, our retriever took one look, smiled to himself as if to say, "Can't you see it's easier to go round it rather than over"!! But he does love swimming in the sea, river or lakes but hates it when the waves pound on the prom. Probably feels the vibrations through his paws. He's also passionate about muddy puddles and will flop in any he can.

He's nearly 8 and still has too much energy.

Re elec, definitely, a very pleasant surprise but am determined not to spend the day online just because I can so about to head out into the Tranny and do some more work on it before a drive out later.

Re dog training, RTP will be 9 next month so I am not taking his working trials training too seriously, and it's more for his enjoyment and to satisfy his need to work and also to train me in how to train my next dog for working trials. I am not going to push him too hard as I know he can physically do a 6 foot scale and 9 foot long jump (he jumps 9ft stream gullies on the fells effortlessly, and will scramble easily over a 6 foot stile or stone wall) but whilst he is a smart dog and still very capable of learning new things, he's perhaps not quite as quick on the uptake as he used to be. Unless there is a very positive reward for him (eg tennis ball or the sheer enjoyment of being out on the fells) he does tend to have a similar attitude as your retriever. Ditto re swimming but he hates the hose!! And ditto re muddy puddles, especially in summer when puddles on the fells tend to be just sticky mud baths. And why does he love drinking out of muddy puddles when there's a clean puddle or stream nearby?

Shame we don't live closer as I would definitely commission you to make me a scale and I know a few other people who would be interested in one too. Although N Wales isn't too far for me, just a couple of hours, and it could be combined with a couple of days away in the BWV as I don't know that part of the world at all. Let me know if you'd be interested in making me a scale, and whether you'd be able to make one that could be disassembled for portability.

Time to switch off now and get on with sorting out the vents and insulation in the Tranny, have a good day everyone.

Had a strange night's sleep last night, woke at 5am exactly, then 6 am exactly and then 7am exactly. But then went back to sleep and only just woke up now (lucky it's half term so I don't have to be up) but had a strange dream, not exactly a nightmare, but not a very good dream, that my house was flooding and the water was coming through the ceiling and it turned out that there was a hole in the roof! I guess that trying to fix the whirly bird vent on the van yesterday must have been the cause of the dream!

Just as well I didn't look at Victor's nasty pictures, I'd have been having night terrors!

Another day insulating the Tranny today, I can't believe how long it's taking, but it is quite a fiddly job. Have a good day OH whatever you decide to do, you sound as indecisive as I usually am!

Just cos you wake up early doesn't mean you get the day off, you know! Get those fingers going.

Hi OH
Hope you didn't get stuck on the floor again this morning. It's not funny really, is it, when you can't get up? I know cos I've done it. The worst I ever heard was an elderly lady who used to come to the clinic where I worked. She fell into her bath one morning while trying to clean the wall behind it and she couldn't get out. She banged and shouted all day but no-one came to investigate until about 7 in the evening. Fortunately she was clothed but she still had mild hypothermia and was quite ill, she had to spend the night in hospital. I'm always extra careful in the bathroom!

Foggy here too most of the day, not nice on the motorway over Shap.

We don't get a recycling collection, too far from town apparently. But there is a small recycling point in the village in aid of the village school so I take mine there and get great pleasure and stress relief from hurling my glass jars into the glass bins, especially if I think of whoever has pee'd me off whilst doing it!

whitevanwoman
02-03-2012, 09:42
Wow! Was it a full moon or something last night? A friend on FB said that she couldn't sleep too.

Sorry to say, but I was out like a light about 1am and slept like a log till about 10 mins ago. Much needed after a busy week. My weekend starts today :D I would like to get away this weekend, even if only for 1 night but I've got loads to do and my bank balance is looking a bit sad

But that does mean that if I get on with my paperwork and housework today then I can spend Sat and Sun working on the Tranny, getting a second layer of insulation done, and a few other jobs which I realised I need to do as a result of using it last weekend. Slowly but surely its beginning to transform into a "live-in" van.

Hope you're all not too tired today.

Morning OH, I've been quiet because I've been really busy this week, and for a pleasant change, I've been sleeping well, going to bed much earlier (normally it's after 2am, this week it's been about midnight, or just after) and sleeping a good 8+ hours.

I was thinking about going away overnight this weekend in the BWV but its another grey miserable damp day here and the forecast for tomorrow is the same and anyway I still have a load of paperwork to get through and although I made a good start on the housework yesterday, there's still plenty more that needs doing. And having used the van last weekend, I've got a list of jobs to do before using it again - the more I use it, the more I'm finding out what I need to do, where I want storage, seats etc. So a busy weekend for me I think.

Hope you're ok today, you got any plans for the weekend?

Hello O.H.
Thought I'd better start with your thread today. It was so sweet of you to miss me,that made me really happy. Sorry to hear your back is still complaining, I had a better day but still very tired. :sleep-027: It is so frustrating, I love doing my garden and this week there has been quite a lot of nice weather. I feel as if I've just totally wasted it all. By the time I've done the work that has to be done, there's no time or energy left for gardening. Still, there are plenty of people a lot worse off than me and at least I don't have a bad back. Keep smiling! :)

I've no idea what's changed over the past week (although it's interesting that it is since I went away for a few days in the Tranny) but I've been sleeping really well all week, average 8hrs, and my usual problem of not feeling tired enough to go to bed until 2am or 3am seems to have cured itself, I've been in bed around midnight, reading for a short while and then going straight to sleep, and waking naturally without my usual 3 alarms about 8am / 8.15am.

Maybe a few nights in the Tranny has cured years of sleeping problems!!!

Or maybe it's just because it feels like Spring is on the way

After a constructive afternoon in the Tranny yesterday laying 2 layers of sleeping mat on the floor, today I'm off to Homebase for a last roll of silver bubble wrap to finish the roof insulation (although there's still a pile of paperwork to do and the house is still a mess!).

Hope you all have a good day

Oh cheer up love! What are you doing to get warm - cuddle up in your duvet? Have a nice warm drink - hot chocolate? oxo? Depends what you like. I always cuddle my little fat dog if I'm cold, he's always very warm. The greyhound would like to cuddle too but she's too big really, except for when we all pile on to the bed together. ¡hola!
It's on these cold, clear nights that we get a good vista of our neighbours in the dark beyond.
If you can drag yourself into a warm coat and boots with double sockage, and arm yourself with a hot brew, spend a few minutes outside and look at our nearest neighbour, Mars. It is so red at the moment, you can spot it straight away in the south. Over in the west, Jupiter and Uranus (whose?) are still really bright and should bring a little spot of awe in to your chest on a night like this.

Glad you got a little bit of rest, better than nothing. Don't fight the poor duvet, it's your best friend! Cuddle it instead! I hope you had a more cheerful day, I'd try to cheer you up telling you about mine but it was not nice at all. I had a hospital appointment and I so hate going to the hospital. He's a nice consultant but I don't want to see him and I don't want to be there at all. The only thing I liked was a funny little baby in the waiting room, he was so cute. I have heard it told with an "admin and 100 forum mods" but I wouldn't be so bold. Since we don't have any forum mods, probably safe to mention!

Still awake and not ready for bed. Mind in turmoil, using motorhome is the only relaxion that will have any positive effect in controling the sub conscious mind! On that subject always wild camp alone, anyone interested in a weekend meet in South Wales. Often see threads for northen meets but nobody suggested anything in this area before!

We had a meet in the Forest of Dean last year.

There are probably more Northern members, but a fair few Southern ones too... we had a meet at Stonehenge recently and got about 30 vans - probably too many in hindsight but the venue was more than large enough!

yea I noticed that meets in the north are often mentioned. Thought about joining Stone Henge but it was still a fair distance especially with fuel prices today. Hope that the fuel protest in London today has been of some benefit! However I doubt it it will remain to be seen in the forthcoming budget.

Stonehenge was 250 mile round trip for me as I live in the East.

I doubt fuel protests will make much difference. They can't afford to cut any duty but it may persuade them putting the max on this year.

Off topic but maybe a discussion for a new thread....

Surely if they were to cut fuel duty, that would result in increased demand and therefore higher duty due to higher volume of sales? As the price of fuel increases, I'm guessing that people must be restricting their driving more and more to essential driving only but a cut in duty would encourage them to spend more on fuel for non-essential journeys, ie leisure activities.

oh no no no,this would only result in hordes of poor people clogging up the roads making life hell for us rich. if this was to happen i may have to reconsider the advantages of being fabulously wealthy.

I used precisely this argument.... among others.... when organising fuel protests and lobbying the Government, "sympathetic MP's" and treasury officers this time last year. Another argument was the proposal to drastically cut fuel duty but recoup these losses by increasing the duty on off-licence and supermarket alcohol sales.
When I even got a reply to the deluge of correspondence I sent to MP's, Gov't departments etc all I got was flannel and official blurb ....mostly saying how marvellous they were that they were going to forego the coming increase in duty and crap about the discount scheme in remote areas (OK if you lived in the Isles of scilly or the Highlands and Islands)......whatever happened to that bright idea then?
Our protests were simple, legal and aimed to cause disruption and generate more interest. I organised protests in six locations throughout the UK getting myself onto local radio at peak times in those areas (drivetime, breakfast shows etc).....I assume I that reached an audience of thousands. The attendance at our demos was pathetic....fifteen vehicles was the highest of the Newquay protests.....twelve in Peterborough ....five in Gloucester. That said it all to me....The great British public are too frightened/lazy/apathetic to stand up and say "Enough". We are being squeezed and screwed over very subtley....we are too comfortable....or just comfortable enough....just like the boiling frog metaphor in Daniel Quin's "The story of B"
It's funny how convenient it is for government or whoever else is in control to keep the masses drunk on cheap alcohol while making it increasingly difficult to travel to work and think for themselves when a cheap and simple solution is staring them in the face
Wasn't there a similar situation in the Native American reservations and Aboriginal communities in Australia?

Good for you for trying to do something, sadly I agree that many will complain but few will be prepared to put their neck on the line or make an effort to support you.

I do alot of campaigning on a different issue, often at financial cost to myself, and certainly at huge time and effort cost to myself and sometimes I get very disillusioned and it seems so pointless when faced with hostility and apathy, but I can at least know that although I haven't changed the system, I've added my voice to those of others, and at some point all those voices might be able to shout loud enough to be heard.

Well said! and I feel the same way....but no-one was being asked to put their necks on the line...or even their driving licences.
All that was required at these demos was that you turned up to a pre-arranged petrol station and filled with the minimum amount of fuel permitted (usually 2 litres), pay at the kiosk, drive away then return to the queue and to repeat this process until you'd filled your tank or spent your required amount....All this was legal and very easy to do. You would need the fuel anyway so the only inconvenience was the extra time taken to get it.
I was staggered and amazed at some of the excuses for not participating that I heard.

:lol-053: That reminds me of when I was a student with my first car, Prudence the 2CV - that's exactly what I used to do, except that in those days it only took about a tenner to fill the tank so the minimum fill was probably about a pound, and I could drive for a week on that. The petrol gauge didn't work so I had to do maths every time I filled up to work out exactly how many miles I could drive before having to fill up again, most of the time I got the maths right but I always carried a full spare petrol can which was used regularly!

I guess it would probably take people a good half day or more to fill up a modern tank by minimum fill these days, and I suppose for a lot of working people, that is a big ask. To be honest, i would struggle to fit that in and I work from home, not full time and don't have a family to think about. And there is strength in numbers so if the petrol station is swamped with protesters, you feel less inhibited to join in but if there's only a few people doing it, it's very difficult to face up to making yourself unpopular.

I would have probably joined in and at least done a few minimum fill ups even if I didn't fill the whole tank (the Tranny would take about 50 fill ups to fill) but I didn't know anything about it. But I would have been more reticent to protest at my local fuel station, and would prefer to target one I didn't use. Unfortunately alot of rural independent fuel stations, out of necessity, have to charge a higher price in order to survive, as they don't get the volume of traffic through and have to compete with supermarkets etc. But for the rural consumer, they are essential and it can sometimes be cheaper to fill locally at a higher price than to drive further for a cheaper price.

But this is what they don't want, (increased demand) they want everybody to use public transport, and the Govt to make as much duty as possible on smaller amounts sold whilst appearing to be green. At the end of the day they just want your money and they know that we will moan, but they are arrogant enough to ignore it.

yep some of us rely more on cars now than we did when we where younger age comes into it but fuel prices go up but when they drop will other prices drop inline with the fuel price drop.i genrerally put ten pounds in ,unless I planning on going some where then get the sat nav out and check for nearest tesco, asda, and work out fuel stops so i carry not the min to get there but not a excesive amount,so use less fuel as not carrying the wieght. It makes a difference when i had my diesel mpv it was so much diesel and so much veg filled up here.then launceston tescos then on in to cornwall .worked out i would save on average 2gallons of fuel doing the run from here to truro and back

Hi OH!
Glad to hear you got over your poorly and everyone had lots to talk about.
Came back this evening, we were going to stay another night but it was so extremely windy the van was shaking all the time and making our heads ache and we worried we might end up in the sea. Went to a gorgeous little place called Boulmer on the Northumberland coast that I'd seen recommended on here. Free car park next to a lovely beach, no problems about over-nighting. The dogs loved it. Loads of interesting birds to watch, waders, gulls and ducks. Nice take away fish and chips from the pub. Shame it decided to blow a gale. We'll definitely be going back another time.
