I'm pretty sure that this one is now pay & display. We used to stop here regularly for the view over Thirlmere, and maybe a brew, but last few times we have gone past have noticed what looks like ticket machine. NT obviously want even more money.
regards
Allen

Yup, I checked it out this week. The machine says overnight occupation of vehicles forbidden, or words to that effect. There is a long layby just north with no restrictions. All the car parks round Thirlmere are the same.

The location that Nij has given is for the layby, not the car park ...

The first one of these is definitely signed "No Overnight Parking" and is pay and display during daytime. It does have useful toilet facilities though. The other ones look ok, but I don't know if they now have signs on them too. Maybe anyone who passes the area could check them out?

As for the layby overlooking Thirlmere in the original post, like other members I seem to think it had a sign or ticket machine on it the last time I was there, in December 2010, but I can't remember for certain. (the image on Google Earth Street View was taken in March 2009, so will not show them)

I wouldn't call it a layby as there are marked spaces and a ticket machine tho it's hardly off the road. But semantics!
The "layby" I mean is the short section of separated road just north. See if I can do a linky: 54.546897,-3.058696 - Google Maps (http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?q=54.546897,-3.058696&num=1&t=h&vpsrc=0&hl=en&ie=UTF8&z=17). That doesn't have any restrictions other than a notice warning about litter, and no P&D machines!

First one is Swirls car park, P&D with no overnight occupation/blah. Although I have to admit I have crashed overnight in there before we had the camper, I was off up Helvellyn the next day and paid my 7quid so I don't feel guilty about it!

Second one I think has a time restriction for people to go up High Rigg (the hill behind) and not much more. But I can't remember definitively so next time I'm over there, maybe next week I'll have a look and take a photo of the sign.
