View Full Version : A couple of wild camping sites in old Westmorland

We've just acquired a camper-van and after a couple of short stays at a relative's place and on a camp-site, we decided to try wild camping for the first time. After two great days at Ribblehead quarry (the location and the pub were great, but not the weather!) we moved on. We hadn't realized it was Appleby-in-Westmorland fair time and all the sites we'd downloaded from this site to our satnav were full of travellers with their horses, carts, trucks etc.

After quite a drive we came across two large lay-bys at Aisgill summit, on the Settle to Carlisle railway below Wild Boar Fell at N54.22.621 W002.20.952. One was taken by a large motor-home so we spent the night in the other; very little traffic on both the railway and road that night.

The next day we had the same trouble, but found a great site on a disused road between Sedbergh and Kendal at N54.19.836 W002.38.091 just down from a quarry. The old road was closed by the construction of the M6 and there are plenty of good spots to stay. We didn't see another vehicle or indeed anyone at all that evening and night.

Neither of these sites seem to be on the POI register for the area and we can recommend both.
