This is a great one.

The site is owned by the EA, but public access is welcomed. The largish public car park is locked at sunset, and opened at about 0730 each day, but the local staff don't mind locking in a motor home or two for the night, with permission.

Access by cycle or foot is open all night, and the friendly village pub, the Kings Head (free house with at least three local real ales on hand-pump) is a ten minute walk away. The food at the pub is brilliant, but not the cheapest.

No charge for parking, and there are toilets left open all night. Talk to Martin or Rob, the EA staff members who live on site, and you might even get a free tour of the barrage motor-room and a history talk.

Large grassy doggie walking area by the barrage (that stops salt water entering the Yorkshire Derwent from the tidal Ouse) or along the river bank. The village of Hemmingbrough is a good footpath walk of about two miles across fields to the north, with a pub, The Crown, that does food and has a folk club on the first Sunday of each month.

Highly recommended.
