Hi the toaster in the van is really pathetic, can anyone give me some ideas how to toast bread without one. I bought a wire thingy from Lidl's supposed to be used by campers and used over the naked flame on the hob top, but it didn't work. thanks Alison

10751I've heard of a wire style toaster with a long wire handle where you slip one slice between the box shaped end and hold it over the flame. I remember my grandmother having something similar in the 60's, but no idea where you'd get it - perhaps ebay?

The only other type I've heard of are the type in the photo which I assume is what you tried using.

There's another similar thread running somewhere... we use an optimus toaster - folds flat and works every time, only hassle is the 'one slice at a time/ keeping up with wife& dog toastmonsters' situation.

Yes Victor the wire thing is exactly the same as in the photograph but that took longer than the cookers toaster :p, problem is we like toast.

We have tried all the gadgets but the best way of all is just to spear a slice of bread with a knife and hold it over the gas ring , don't rate the wire gauze things at all ,slower more mess and more washing up.

If you have a double skillet (you can buy them at shows), they will do toast.

Yesterday I took delivery of a Camp-A-Toaster and tested it out on my ethanol fuelled spirit stove. It worked very well so I'll be taking it on my travels.

Speaking on behalf of Alisonwo:pc: ........ Dave and Mary,We have a cooker with a grill! The problem is that the grill on the cooker is pathetic.

Somebody on another forum said he had the same problem and fixed it by drilling out the jet on the burner.....!!!

drilling out gas jets is a very dangerous thing to do and not only could you ruin the grill but the whole van could go up in flames, taking jets out to clean them is often required on cooking equipment due to spillages but if this fails to improve matters gas pressures need to be checked

Have you seen the price of cookers? I looked at this idea and thought no way, got to be a cheaper option.

We got one of these after seeing it recommended on another camper forum:

Gelert Camping Toaster With Folding Handle | eBay (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Gelert-Camping-Toaster-With-Folding-Handle-/251047849780?pt=UK_SportingGoods_Camping_CookingSu pplies_ET&hash=item3a739e2f34)

Cooks the toast VERY fast on our cooker and toast is cooked evenly and tastes good.

Cheers,
Dave

bet most of you have already got most of the equipment needed to make good toast

a non stick frying pan , together with a vented spanish lid [ maybe 2 ] , heat on very low gas , and you get excellent toast ; also cooks pizza perfectly

extra weight ? , maybe 50 grammes

We make toast, and do most of our cooking in fact, on a charcoal fire with a regular grid/grille of expanded metal. Works lovely and you can do 8 slices at once :)

Mine is just a flat metal base with holes in it topped with wire mesh and it sits flat on the hob, super toast in no time, I have just bought a new one in the Chinese shop here in Portugal 1-50 cents bargain, our van does have a grill but our toaster is quick and easy SIMPLES:wave::wave:

A lot on Amazon search for caravan grill pan also sure I've seen them in larger caravan dealers such as Catterick Caravans don't know who to recommend around your way as never noticed any caravan sales sites as when in Hull I'm usually getting lost.

You can also get them at Go Outdoors via post ;-) as they dont seem to have a branch near Hull.

Sweetheart, You know when I went to Telford....well we used the grill for toast and it worked perfectly......just had to wait for the grill elements to get red hot .......OK a bit slow compared with our electric toaster at home, but when you're out in the van one usually has time!

OK other folks.....OH always wants things done yesterday:D
