Hi

Well, we are now back in England and I don't know what all the fuss was about – it's a beautiful spring day with no sign of snow, frost, wind or rain at all! ;)

Anyway, here are some of the aires we used on our way back through France:

1.Cahors – 44.44017N; 1.44155E. Free for 3 motorhomes (but there is a large unofficial overspill just about 50 metres further along the road. Water and waste disposal provided. Nice location by the River Lot.
2.Perigaux – 45.18772N; 0.73074E. The only aire we had to pay for (5 euros including services) but this is the Dordogne and free aires are few and far between here. Quiet and with a pleasant 800 metre riverside walk into the centre of town. It was the “Guide Officiel” Aire of the Year in 2011.
3.Oradour sur Glane – 45.9353N; 1.02514E. On the opposite side of the village to the Martyrs site (but there is daytime parking at that site). Over 40 spaces – free. Services are 2 euros (by token).
4.Lussac les Chateaux – 46.40279N; 0.72562E. Free parking and services. Close to the centre of the village but not available on Market day (Friday) from 6am to 2pm. Lorry noise at night can be a problem.
5.Le Mans – 48.00151N; 0.18901E. 7 places and services – free. Levelling blocks required. In a quiet spot by the river and next to a small marina.
6.Rugles – 48.82316N; 0.7107E. Free parking and services (including electricity). Very nice spot near to a water mill and within very easy reach of the village centre.
7.Cleres – 49.60131N; 1.11713E. Free parking for at least 15 vans. Services by token. Pleasant and quiet spot close to a beautiful village.
8.Wissant – 50.88682N; 1.67027E. Free parking for at least 40 vans. Waste disposal but no water. Very convenient for the ferries and the Tunnel and a rare free aire in this particular area.

Hope the above may be useful to some of you.

A route I've not used for a few years so your useful update is welcome should I chance to go that way later in the year.
Obviously vwalan hasn't converted you to taking the Santander/Bilbao option, he makes a good case for it.

Hi

Lots of people do use the Santander/Bilbao option but we are retired and therefore in no hurry to get anywhere - plus the fact that we love France (it's just too cold in winter!). On top of that, even with the extra diesel needed to get to the Channel, the Calais-Dover route is considerably cheaper, so for us there is no choice.

I have copied for my route in September and it looks ideal. I will now be greedy and ask if you have the same info for your stops in Spain. We are heading to Benidorm.
