We have a VW T5 and plan to cross into Italy around May 10th. We are looking at crossing either from Briancon (Col de Montgenevre) or Barcelonnette (Col de Larche). Never driven over the alps and have no snow chains but we assume they shouldn't be necessary at this time.Any advice please on the difference between the routes and any general tips. We are avoiding all tolls and tunnels and want to actually see the alps - weather permitting! Then towards Siena avoiding the busy coastal route. Also any web sites with current weather and driving conditions in the alps would be helpful.
Many thanks.

Last year we came back from Italy to France via the Briancon pass, but it was in August so we can't comment on the snow chain issue. A good road with magnificent views, and not too steep.

Whatever you do, avoid the autoroute from Nice in the direction of Genoa (or in reverse), bridge-tunnel-bridge-tunnel-bridge-tunnel almost ad infinitum, with narrow lanes and lunatic lorry drivers - never again!
