OK, this Wild Camp spot is for the seriously brave only.

We were headed to stop at the end of a reservoir further down the road - which was a haul in itself and entailed some serious narrow roads with super steep drop offs.

I was glued to the road trying not to die and missed the turning to the lower reservoir car park. . . so had no choice but to drive to the top one as there was no turning or going back. Once we got there the view was gobsmacking and the walks are amazing. Bring serious walking gear and a map. There are no facilities apart from a mad climber running a makeshift cafe. This spot is a haven for mountain climbers and walkers.

One of the most bonkers Wild Camps we have done and we have wild camped in many, many places.

No - not me but about 20m from where we parked for a couple of days while I got my nerve back to take on the drive back down.

From memory, the decent was so fierce the front brakes were smoking at one point.

Roads like that are best done at night, can't see the drop off. lol :)

Makes you a bit wobbly for a while afterwards. My wifes idea of a good holiday is finding the "green roads" ie the scary ones.

17817 This was one a few years back in Norway (LOTS of green roads) in a VW T3 :scared:

I would have to get out and walk . or I could just take my glasses off - some years ago we did Switzerland in a car and that was civilised - don't like heights (and me from the mountains) :danger:

Added to the POIs for those of unsound mind!

(Looking on Streetview it seems that motorhomes are not permitted in the car park that you intended to use ...)

At this particular spot, there is an access road that goes around the reservoir. If you look carefully, in the distance, it is stopped by some rocks. . . which turned out, when you get close enough, to be a big rock fall that went over the road a couple of years previously. When I actually got to scramble through it, some of the boulders that came down were the size of a house. It was at a place where it is very conceivable that you could have parked which was a tad worrying.

I have to say, I then looked a bit carefully at where to stop in case there was a repeat.

Fact is, there are still some really wild places you can visit in europe if one takes the time to search them out. I guess it is all part of the Wild Camping ethos (well it is for me and the Mrs) that we can stay in some of the most amazing places and see the sun go down.

I assume that you went there via Lourdes, made the sign of the cross, etc. first

If you drive by the car park and on by the lake its permitted. Lots of climbers use the place to overnight, you can ask the cafe owner for water (buying a dfrink or two will help) but the lake is used to supply much of south france so you can use that!

We did drive through Lourdes I think, I can remember hoards of godly people in coaches. I drove through muttering, Drink, Girls, Arse!

Don't you just love Google Maps! Its like Memory Lane.

This is a winter shot but its lovely in the summer and often attracts wild campers.

Its on the route of the Tour de France and we were touring through there (I think 2009 or 2010) when they were passing through on a SUnday. So we thought we would drive the route on the Saturday. It was one of the most crazy things I have seen in a long time with people camped up all over the place to see the event, hanging off cliff edges and the closer you got to the finish the madder it got. Personally, I would have done it on a scooter and be done with it - it was far too steep for pedals.

right michelin 742 map find tafraoute . then just south of it is izerbi.west of izerbi turn south again on the r107 its really only a track . now about half way along if my memory is correct we turned left down another track .,there was a sort of fork in the road .this took us along and finaly down that valley we came out in im-ouzlag and aguerd .we were told nothing had been down the track for ages . you cant go up it ,its that steep. 1782117822
heres one of me just starting going down look hard near the rhside . then that other one again .
these were took by a mate who waited for me to go down just so he could take pics .

some of the tracks in places are now roads with tarmac . never went back with my truck to thnis route . decided its too big to make it . ha ha . another good one is up guorges de dades just keep going up and up till you come to 1782317824agoudal. its a breath taking route .starts off tarmac but keep going soon becomes a great track and goes through the mountains up above the snow line 1782517826

Thanks very much Alan. Just Googled those place, so think I'll find it.

Yes, Dades is fantastic. Went up Todgha and down Dades last time.

Mate I'm going with wants to do Ouaouizerth to Dades. (R302 to R704). He is convinced they join up. I have reservations, will see when we get there. lol.

does show a foot path on the map. might be wide enough . think it might be too hard for my vehicle . but its worth a try. we saw vehicles 4x4 that said they had turned around when we went up dades and back down todra . via agoudal. but we made it .mind half the landrover trips are faily basic . hardly go off roads . we fancy dades to imilchil then across to midelt . last time we were there it was just too snowy for us to do it . but we may one day.
