I have been delayed on my conversion for one unavoidable reason or another however I have now stripped all the ambulancE equipment and the bulk head out of the back of my 508,so wanting to know where I stand with regard to my future contraband trips to France I got the van weighed and with me in it it weighed according to the council tip scales 2900 kg so not much leeway if I was to wish to downsize it.
It leaves 1600kg for furniture and everything else so what sort of weights am I looking at for the usual stuff such as fridge (probably 3way) combined grill and sink unit (no oven), bathroom ,pump ,water heater, rock n roll bed, onboard water and waste, gas,oh and musnt forget the missus.

Hi Deadsfo,

As most vans are limited to 3 1/2 tonnes, your missus would have to be a very large lady to overload you :)

probably worth checking the axle loads too - you could end up ok overall but with an overloaded axle.

Hi Deadsfo, I have the same truck ex NATO 508d ambulance striped mine out but only cut a walk through out of the bulkhead mine weighed in at 2,700 I have down plated to 3,500 gives me 800kg to play with, I have worked out all the contents to go in and will be well within that no problem.

if you have the right licence better to keep the gvw high . then you get cheap road tax and lots of payload . ideal for big fuel tanks and bringing enough beer and wine home to last till you go again . need a good ton load i reckon . ha ha
well more if you can .

I wonder how yours came out at 2,700 I was sat in mine but I dont weigh 200kg!!I have kept it at 4500kg as my licence is pre 1997 and as vanwalen says its cheap road tax as a PHG I took out the bulkhead to allow the front seats ,aquired from a Ford galaxy, to turn into the the back.On another note have you managed to get the Webasto working mine spins and makes all the right noises but I dont hear it fire up,I would also be interested to know what you did with the electrics in the back,I sussed out the that everything in the back other than the 12 volt sockets is 24 volts, the row of fuses next to the drivers seat (6 of them)are for the 12volt plugs ,2 each side one on the dash and one in the white cupboard , I have'nt traced where the lights and other stuff in the back go to yet.It would be interesting to see what layout you are planning

I am only 63kg and the van was down to bare metal all paneling and insulation ripped out re done with 40mm kingspan as was all the rear electrics I like to start with a blank canvas, i have the leisure batteries 2x110 24v in series and a 24v vsr in between the starter and leisure batteries with a dropper the other side of the leisure batteries for my 12v stuff three LED lights 12v compressor fridge power outlet and stereo, I have 2x80 solar panels keeping it all toped up. I have not tried the webasto yet as have moved the two heater units to the rear of the van gonna plum them back in next week let you know if it works. I passed my test in 1967 down plated for easy MOT any garage can do it, I must try and get pictures up I will get my son to show me how not very good at at at that kinda stuff. The van is nearly done taken five weeks so far eight hour days lot of work but so rewarding.

thats great that mate you have done really well to get that far in 5weeks,I think you are right about starting with a blank canvas ,stuff thats allready there that you think might save you some money/time usually ends up in the way ,not good enough and ends up ripped out anyway ,what was the reason you plumped for 24 volt? this is something I have'nt been able to make my mind up on yet.
Did you get trouble with the crazy warning buzzer on the dash with its little red light going off every now and then .
I think the pump on the webasto may be stuck ,I was told that it can happen if left idle a long time.
I am going to put a rock n roll bed along the side opposite the side door, thats why I want the revolving seats it will make a little lounge /dining area , and all the bits to the rear of that,I'M also going for an underslung gas tank to save space.
They are a nice truck, the 10ft in the back could have done with another foot or so but its down to making the best of what you have'I suppose if it was 12ft you would think another foot would be handy ,its all down to compromise ,anyway keep at it if I ever get some time to crack on I might see you on the road somewhere next year.

Oh that buzzer got shot of that drove me crazy, the relay is in the centre consort flap on the right just pull the terminals of sorted. I went for 24v cheapest and easiest option I have used the 24v to 12v dropper and fuse box that was in the van already plus if ever the cranking batteries ever got flat I can start from the 24v leisure batteries. Spain after Christmas and then back to Morocco April and May the best time to visit green and lush, gotta spray the van first no milatary looking trucks let into Morocco.

Just going by what a Dutch guy said he runs a 508d 608d etc forum in Holland he had people turned away in Morocco they had Military Ambulances, it's a long way to go and get turned away, I will check it out further, gonna spray it anyway, I have been to Morocco many times seen plenty of military type trucks Unimogs mostly but not in NATO Green, love it in April May can be as you say a bit windy and wet as in my last trip October would be my next choice I find June July August to dry and hot but Ok in the mountains.

the mountain passes are really fantastic .
and if you like surfing well you are in your element .
plus with a merc 508 you will always find a mechanic for one of those .
i bought the mitsubishi canter as i saw where they can go.

you don't need to downrate for MOT, all motorhomes are a class4 MOT even 7.5 ton. The higher rating gives you more payload and cheaper tax. I'm surprised noone has pointed that out yet.

once a phg is classified as a motorhome does the road tax go up,if so do you find it it offset by the difference in insurance you would pay as a van as opposed to a motorhome ,I personally have never found the MOT stations who do the bigger vans anymore perdantic than your ordinary Mot stations

That buzzer will go of again kill it lol, I think it's there for the same reason the rear one above the side door that buzzes in the front when it's pushed to get the attention on the person in the front push the front one to get the attention of the person in the rear, why it goes of on it's own I give up. No I took the fan out wired the light for 12v I kept the vent that supplied air for the heater that was below the cabinet put the sliding vent on the sidewall in line with the outside vent with that open and the ceiling vent open get a nice flow of air and silent that fan is noisy plus have fitted a Heki midi roof light vent in the centre of the roof. I took out all the 24v electrics in the rear out run a 12v wire from the dropper the other side of the leisure batteries to the wire under the drivers seat that goes to the 12v socket on the dash then piggy backed to the cigarette lighter to provide 12v for sat Nav etc.

i dont have a problem with islam . that doesnt bother me at all .
i just found the internal problems in morocco with authority started to get on my nerves .
i liked it better under the old king .
plus i think too many campers are over there now . some dont barter and that makes the prices go up.
but not to worry . just had some more argan oil sent over so i dont need to go this year.
but who knows . might get there.

like it ,all makes sense these are the sort of changes I have been considering ,buzzer went off again for a couple of minutes today, its getting executed in the morning, yeh that fan in the roof is way to noisy dont no when you could comfortably use it ,I suppose when you think what the van was designed for a bit of fan noise to get rid of god knows what smells is a small price to pay,I was thinking of using the 12 volt plug just above the rear step to run a reversing camera .
did you take down the plastic moulded roof when you put in the roof light or just cut thro' it,I would think it would be a nightmare to get back up,I was thinking of changing the the wall cladding to some better quality ply just use the existing as a template.I would be really interested in some pics email me some if you get a minute deadsfo@hotmail .co.uk

I am going to use the rear exterior 12v wiring for a camera to, I cut the centre of the plastic panel out to get rid of the high spots then cut the roof out put the ply up scribed around from the top then cut out, I put new 5mm ply all round the walls. I have sent you some pictures in emails, only just sussed I could send multi pictures so sorry for so many.

I also have the same truck as you and deadfso, glad to of found some people on here with the same truck as me. I was wondering where you put your leisure batteries. I was thinking of sinking a box beneath the floor in front of one of the back wheels and getting an auto electrician to wire everything up for me as that's one thing I don't have the confidence to do my self. Would also like to see some pictures of your layout as well if that's possible for some ideas.
