Phil was approached to sell this forum to a Canadian outfit that hoovers up forums. Wisely (very wisely it turns out) they have a habit of ruining forums and driving members away. They bought Motor Home Facts and have banned a member already because he had said what happened to another forum he was a member of. They seem quite ruthless and don't give a damn about any forum they own as long as it is a commercial success for themselves. Apparently it does not matter if the forum is ruined and everyone leaves, they still get money out of it. I cannot explain fully as the details of how they do it is on MHF and the forum is down this morning (probably following the thread that they don't like).

Never mind, a White Knight is already riding to the rescue. Cannot elaborate more than that. :king:

Dave Burley at MHF says

The new owners are specialists in Forum / Community ownership and management and are called VerticalScope ...... and I feel VerticalScope will have the resources to be able to progress with MHF to the next level.

How does this affect you?

The best part is it shouldn’t affect you at all. All the helpers stay just as they are and our devoted members continue to enjoy the site as always. Other than a new admin behind the scenes (who will be more available than I)

I don't think it's fair to totally run down the new owners till more has happened. Forums do sometimes die when they change hands because the new management doesn't fully appreciate the goals of the members. On the other hand there have been some huge successes with forums growing to 10 times the size. It depends on a whole raft of factors.

It seems people are ready vilify on the basis of a bit of hearsay... non of us knows the full picture yet.

Personally, I don't think that much will change. A few regulars might drift away but there are always new members joining who will make the numbers up again. It has been getting quieter on there with fewer daily posts but other forums are the same. There have been upsets on here but the site has gone from strength to strength. The trouble with Facts being the biggest forum means it can only go one way ...down.

It was the original largish motorhoming forum in the UK (I think) so it would be a shame to lose it. I've only read stuff there, not posted, but the general profile of the membership seems quite different to here. Like small motorhomes forum, I can't imagine a high proportion of the members doing wild camping or self-building.

Admin
11-11-2013, 14:53
Wildcamping is actually the oldest large motorhome forum although the boast some 80,000 registrations we have had over 38,000. We just delete inactive and spam registrations to maintain a true figure of active membership.

Based on our niche focus I think it speaks volumes for the members of this community.

That's a bit of a negative take isn't it? I don't see any reason why it can't keep getting "bigger & better".

Having said that, while really big forums are very active, it is still, by & large, only a handful of members that contribute regularly. If that core of members are polite, helpful & chipper it will continue to grow as the members who only "take" continue to come in. The core problem with large size is the need for regular moderation as the larger body of people leads to idiots who delight in trolling & trying to cause infighting.

With a large number of members, there is always bound to be a few that are annoyed enough to rise to the bait. in a smaller community where most people know each other that is far less likely to happen. Banning the idiots is difficult as they will often have multiple ID's & in a busy forum, there is little chance for a moderator to have the time to weed them all out.

Firefox

I only based my assumption on the fact that Nukeadmin said he had been running MHF "for over 10 years" to quote him, which would date their forum to 2003 or 2002 or earlier, whereas I'd thought Wild Camping dated back to 2004.

Regardless of whether it was first or not, it would be a shame to lose a well established forum like that. My guess is that it won't happen.

Apparently there was some talk of VerticalScope buying forums purely to increase the nominal size of its user base so advertising could be sold. Whether they were active users or not didn't matter.

I'd hope most advertisers would take a more detailed view than simply registrations, and base their campaigns on current traffic and click through rates, not on dreams.

The oldest members have a join date of May 1st 2005 (from memory) but I believe that it is a re-start date (if you get what I mean). Something cataclysmic happened and might have been when Jim and a few others broke away and started 'Fun'. I could have it wrong of course ..... which will send Smaug into raptures. :lol-049: Private joke there.

Firefox

I reckon Jim/Fun etc was much later... around 2008/2009 as I remember when Fun was a new free forum. I wasn't looking at motorhome forums before about 2008 so can date it from that.

I seem to vaguley remember the site disappearing for a while & I thought I re-joined in 2004. Thought that MHF ws also around that time as well as a couple of other that either diappeared or never did very well.

Are there any other members who used to be on the uk.rec.caravanning usernet group (or something like that) works similar to forums but just text & not really organised topics. Used to be through DeJaNews which Google bought in 2001 http://www.google.co.uk/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=1&cad=rja&ved=0CCwQFjAA&url=http%3A%2F%2Fen.wikipedia.org%2Fwiki%2FGoogle_ Groups&ei=PkyBUrrTJoaq0QWC7IGQAw&usg=AFQjCNGKJLEdDGwjb9F1xCC-ZopoXH_92A&bvm=bv.56146854,d.d2k
We even arranged a rally (got some pics somewhere), can't remember where it was or when but must have been before 1997.

Just had a search & found that uk.rec.caravanning is still around, also found some of my posts going back to 1997 still there.

I remember the old news groups from the early days of the net. They were mostly pretty difficult to use compared to forums. Many were full of spam and not too well moderated either - we've certainly moved on since then with the new forum layouts and features.

Spent some time reading through some of the posts on MHF, if I were a member I would feel a bit uneasy with it being run by a business. It was started with the best intentions as a site run by somebody who had an interest in the subject, while he has the right to profit from his work he has effectivley given away information that members have submitted freely & worse members details to a commercial company that is based abroad. It will be interesting to see if they are honest & don't use this for profit. I think he should have given the members the opportunity to have their details removed if they felt uncomfortable with the change. Probably my details are still somewhere in database even though I haven't been a member for many years.

I think Phil is doing an excellent job running his forum & hope he is able to resist the pressure to sell.
