I'll take the Pinzgauer. Ideal for the M25 on a Friday night.

My landrover 101 would have beaten the Pinz hands down

They missed the volvo 306's which are good trucks

The Mogs are great if you can take the loack of speed and the lack of economy

Was that saab one pulling another saab on a trailer - weird - heard of taking a spares kit but thats crazy

And they didn't list mine - shame !

Unimogs are great, very capable when the going gets tough, but I have always questioned why they are favourite for an expedition vehicle. They are glorified tractors after all.
Anyway, mate has just got one to go of to Africa, sold up and he is off. Max speed 50MPH, and then you are deafened, in fact anything over 30MPH and you can forget having a conversation. The later ones are obviously quieter but huge money. There are loads of 4x4 trucks that make better traveling vehicles.

It's the Terrawind for me, this machine could re-awaken my desire to travel in a motorhome if I had bundles of dosh.

No good for this grid-locked island though, but what a way to travel America!

I'm thrilled to see TWO VWs in the top 10 - I'm a big fan. But I would say that the original Kombi campers were still coolest of all.

Having had a Unimog 1700L38, the biggest of the big Mogs, I can say it was an interesting experience. Great in the Moroccan desert and the High Atlas but on ordinary roads an expensive, noisy nightmare. We got used to going everywhere at 80kph but it was definitely noise cooled. That's why we've now got our ideal - the Bimobil on a Toyota 79 chassis. And it's the Australian 79 with the 24 valve turbo engine, not the anaemic European 12 valve naturally aspirated. I think also that the Bimobil is much better built than the Earth Roamer (and a lot cheaper) and the 79 beats any Ford hands down. We'll be driving it back home to Oz next year, well, to Vladivostok anyway. Pinzgauer falls into same category as the Mog, expensive, specialist and not something you'd want to do a lot of road miles in. Also, try getting Steyr-Puch parts in the middle of Kazakhstan. The Landy 101, in extreme offroad use, would have to give way to the Pinz, but as a usable offroad and onroad vehicle it would be infinitely preferable and the forward control made it a great package. End of monologue on a favourite topic.

If I were doing shorter term camping and mainly onroad stuff, I'd find the VW Doubleback interesting.
