from centre of town, head towards the ferry terminal. carry straight on, past a hospital (which used to be a naval hospital) to the very end of the road. here you find a car park with height barriers. just to right is a dead end road suitable for vans or if you want to get nearer water, park on the beach, little access track onto a solid, level area just in front of the tower. my truck is 4ton and had no problems with getting bogged. lots of local history .. bomb blast wall, bomb shelters, old military prison...and more. just talk to the local dog walkers.

Wouldn't advise parking on the left hand side just before the barriers, it's now a haven for the local boy racers and you may get your motorhome dented and you won't get any peace until the little darlings have gone to bed. The dead end road on the right is fine as long as you park at the furthest end. The car park is popular with dog walkers, fishermen and locals watching the water and eating chips. Get the odd dogger down there very occasionally but keep your curtains closed and you'll be fine.

Another place is just past the lorry terminal at the ferryport. There are no facilities but you can stay there all night. Downside being the lorries are very noisy and you get the ferry loading/unloading in the early hours.

The far end of Tesco's car park is ok, as is Focus - as long as you have your own toilet facilities. There's a McD's nearby which is handy for breakfast and a quick wash & brush up.
