When typing '&' into html you tend to get '&amp'

I believe the "&" symbol is correctly known as an ampersand.

So &amp could be HTML's way of saying insert the & symbol at this point??

It used to cause me grief, so much, so I avoid typing '&' when I type into an html doc. Never really learnt what the problem was, just how to avoid it. :)
