We are looking at having a few days in Northumberland, and in particular at Kielder. Has anyone used the CR location at the observatory, and was it ok?

It didn't specifically say it was not allowed and I asked the tutor for the evening and he seemed to think it wouldnt be a problem. Nice quiet 'rest of the night' other than quite a few staff cars use the track throughout the night until just before dawn. Didn't really bother me at all :)

I emailed them last year to ask if it would be ok to stay on after an event in the motorhome in the obsv. carpark. Can't remember exactly what they said but it was negatively toned and suggested that the barrier further back down the track (nearer the main road?) might be dropped and locked when the staff departed.

Edit: I think the email response suggested I could use the Kielder campsite.

I'm guessing they may have an official response but, in practice, may be more accommodating.

Also, the event we attended (in cars) last year was popular and there didn't seem to be an overabundance of space to park.

Sorry, just checked the CR you asked about and it is close to the main road so my statements above are probably irrelevant.

Thanks for your reply, that parking area at the bottom of the track is the CR POI. We will give it a go. Thanks again for your reply.

Take lots of insect repellent if you are going in midge season.

They are hardy midges up there, if you think Scottish midges are bad wait until you come across the Kielder ones.

One of them would have been us, as we were there two weeks ago

Ah cool, we stayed the Saturday night after spending the friday night over at Simonside. We were the old Talbot and the bright Blue VW. Left on Sunday when it started to snow! I remeber the big Fiat parked up in the corner with a couple of mountain bikes on the back then a smaller camper with a pop top (cant remember the model?) were either of them you?
