Somehow I have managed to put a password on to a file to my accounts and locked them. I haven't a huge amount of data on them, but I really don't want to wade through the paperwork again. My nerves were wrecked first time round, and I am just churning up thinking about having to do it all again. We thought we knew what the password was, but, its not correct. Its Open Office - I stupidly didn't set up password recovery. Anyone any suggestions please? I had most of the files on a usb, which I was able to get at, but it b synced & locked that as well.

I'd advise you to use Google to see if there's a solution ...

Check your caps lock and try what you thought was the password again.

Oh dear. Try this; it's got me out of trouble a few times. :)

Asterisk Key - shows hidden passwords under asterisks (http://www.lostpassword.com/asterisk.htm)

Unfortunately tried caps, and a lot of variations.

No asterisks - but that'll be a useful one to keep.

I have a very similar problem. My Brother died on Friday and I am left to clear up all the things that need doing when that happens. His computor holds ALL his dealing financial and personal , It is running windows 8 and it is password locked and I cannot find where he put the details. I am at my wits end as all these password bypass tools are too complicated for me and I need a geek to open it.

have you tried someone who repairs pc's. There are a lot of programs available that will 'find' lost passwords.

Go to MajorGeeks.Com - MajorGeeks (http://www.majorgeeks.com/)
There are many tools on this site that are aimed at the normal computer user, so are straight forward to use.
Hope this helps (ex tech geek)

Your problem, as I understand it, is that you have password locked a file in Open Office, not your PC itself.

To put it basically is you have protected the document rather than just a sheet within it you may well be stuffed.
I personally, would try every other bit of software under the sun. Change the files extension to .xls & try opening it with Excel etc. etc.

If not just run a search & you will come up with programmes such as these but don't hold your breath.

Condolences on the loss of your brother.
Hubby says you could remove the hard drive, connect it to another computer, which should read it as a drive. Hope this helps. If you want any help, pm me with your phone number and hubby can talk you through it.
