Contacted AIB insurance today for a quote for my Elddis motohome which we are about to collect, I was quite surprised after all the good feedback on this website, their quote was not that competitive in fact if we added on 75 for breakdown and overseas cover which was offered, which is inclusive in the price of two other quotes I received, they were quite a bit off the mark, this is a 2015 new motorhome so a very good chance it won't breakdown, plus we are unlikely to do over 6000 miles per year, and Ireland may be the only overseas trip we are planning in the next two or three years, we are both in our late fifties so insurance wise I thought we were quite a safe bet. It's 2 berth motorhome with only 2 belted seats, so never any passengers, thought that may have kept the cost down.
We have both full no claims, no convictions in the last 10 years in fact no convictions at all, we were willing to restrict the vehicle to 6000 miles per annum, Elaine sold her car ( our 2nd car) to help us with cash towards the purchase plus it was hardly being used, thus she had full no claims from direct line to transfer to the motorhome if required. Postcode not a problem, safe area however AIB were not in the top 3 for quotes and we still have one or two to come in so they could be well down the pecking order.
Safeguard is the best so far, with full comprehensive insurance for husband and spouse, breakdown, overseas breakdown, recovery, repatriation, unlimited mileage, and legal included in the quote.

It is just one of the quirks of the Insurance industry.

They were too expensive for me as well. Other companies also quoted me high premiums but others did not. When I was insured via the Camping and Caravan Club, I had a really good policy through the broker they used. They changed to a different broker and my premium shot up by over 40%.

Funny old World innit. :(

We moved last April 10 miles down the road from were we used to live and our premium doubled . Yes it is a funny old world:(

I can certainly recommend Safeguard (whose scheme is with Allianz) when it comes to claims handling.

It may well be but don't see what more we could do to secure a cheaper deal with them

well it would have been nice if they had beaten your cheapest quote then you would have been happy but some of us have to support those who get it cheaper it is like everything in theworld some you some you lose well you never know you might get a discount on something else you need for the van

Did you just try to get quotes in your wife's name? Some motorhome insurance prefer you to have a current car policy and then mirror the no claims. Just a thought.

For a good few years now i've found the more vehicles you have access to the cheaper the new policy will be.

We've tried AIB several times and they haven't been the lowest even with the discount from here, just the way it goes

Two years ago I had all my vehicles insured with the same firm [Covea] multi car cover, because they were the cheapest.
Half way through my third insurance term with them I had a vehicle stolen from behind locked gates at home. They paid me out less than half the value of the vehicle and told me I had seven days to insure with someone else as they will be withdrawing my cover.
My broker, Alfreton Insurance Services Ltd, was no use whatsoever You only get what you pay for and its usually very expensive to discover cr&p insurance companies.

When I subsequently moved house I received a substantial rebate on all my policies.

I have found that if I get quotes, ring AIB last, give them the cheapest quote I've had and they have always beaten it so far.

I would endorse this, phone them direct and tell them exactly what you want. My MH insurance is less than I could insure an average car for. Comfort were substantially less than others and seem very easy to deal with. Tompa.

Us too with Comfort, AIB would not give us a quote, no reason given, we tried them during the last two years, given up trying now.:mad1::mad1::mad1:

We are new to the motorhome world, we sold our 2nd car and bongo camper to help with the purchase, thus my wife could transfer her maximum no claims discount to the motorhome, as she was the policy holder for the 2nd car, also we had built up 4 years discount for the duration we owned the camper.
We still have one car and I have my own van so the motorhome is used for leisure purposes only.

Tried aib this year and after telling me on two occasions they would phone me back (still waiting on the call) I decided they could ram it and stayed with my current provider

I am insured with Caravanguard, have been since my first 'van' in 2011, so far no-one can beat them for what I want, e.g. European breakdown for a 4.5t vehicle. Hopefully I won't have to find out what their claims service is like, so cannot comment (so far) on that.
I have different insurances for each vehicle which includes two motorbikes and a car. I don't think there is an insurance company that would cover all vehicles...... unless you know different?

over 50? try SAGA

I did, two years ago. The quote was THREE times higher than the one that I eventually went with. :mad2:

I can't say as far as accident claims, but were impressed with their breakdown response while in France. Mechanic came within a hr identified the fault lorry arrived in another hr and van was at Fiat dealer all with in 4 hrs. They called and asked if they needed to arrange accommodation for us over night, next day around midday called again to inquire status of repairs and if accommodation needed for that night which we luckily didn't need as repairs where completed that day
