found a layby sheltered from the road by trees on the A19 york to easingwold/thirsk road just before the fairfield manor hotel. its not very far from the junction (roundabout) with the A1237 at that roundabout is rawcliff bar park & ride where if you go to the office they will open the height barrier & you can park all day for free & get the bus into the railway musuem & other stops in york for 2.30 each return.
hotel & layby are on the left coming from york.

Hi Tony, We stayed in York at the weekend at Rowntree site NOISY and BUSY we passed the Lay by you mentioned looks good.We also walked by a car park"St Georges Field" you can access it on Yorks Car Park Site.There were Toilets (Open at 8pm ) Parking after 6pm was 2.00 until 12pm then no charge made overnight, and no mention of not sleeping in vehicles may be worth looking into-Sue
