Have wild camped on the old A road out of Castleton towards Mam Tor. As the road is closed to thru traffic it is fairly quiet

You can also camp at the top of the abandoned road, there is parking past the entrance to Blue John Caverns.

Girlfriend lives in Sheffield as will i soon so it would be a good bolt hole me thinks. I know exactly where you mean and it is perfect, no longer a road or a part of a farm.

only trouble with parking at the top is that the surfaces are less level than lower down. Also during the day it is busier

spent friday night there, it isnt too level but head to the top it was ok, a few folk left the farm close by in the morning but didnt seem to mind us being there. A bit odd a two lane road sitting abandonded (understand why) so we had breakfast in deckchairs on the white lines looking down the valley. We also had a look at the top end of the road, accessible if you go up Wynats pass, it too could be camped if you leave space for buses to turn or just check the timetable and not be there for the first bus.

Spent friday night there and it was great. A policeman came up about 10ish and had a chat but was fine about us staying as long as we took our litter away (which we always do). As long as we were off the path of the bus, which he said wouldnt be there til 11, we were ok. The short road has ample spaces to pull over right to the end.

My wife and I spent Saturday night there and I now know what 'Wild Camping' means. Winds gusting 60mph had me worried on several occasions although we made sure we weren't near any trees etc. At 5:00am, with no sleep yet, we decided to go down to Castleton main carpark for some shelter. Another motorhome parked just in front left just before us. Anyway we went back up later in the morning and had a bracing walk with fabulous views. Will certainly go back there in May so thanks for the recommendation. Will try to attach a photo.

Stayed on the road up to Mam Tor on Tuesday night last week. Another van was there (if its you - Swift Suntor - Hello!!)

Got a bit windy though in the middle of the night. Parked just by the steps to Blue John Cavern

Great little place and for wildcamping. In December the village is packed Thur-Sun nights due to the Christmas decorations. A couple of the caverns open up for carol singing, but usually sell out early on. Can thoroughly recommend Castleton, but if you hate crowds avoid the pre Christmas weekends!

Back streets of Castleton dont know about this time of year, but in the summer there are a few nice trout in the stream. also the ducks love a bit of bread. ps talking about trout ,have you seen the ones at bakewell. if you walk onto the walk bridge between the car park and town center, just stand and throw some bits of bread in the water there are some whoppers come to the top and take the bread .

hi there. we have been wilding on both the top and bottom halves of the split road and had no problems on either. when on the bottom road, park up and take a look over the wall towards castleton side, there is a stone circle, an old workings with a well worn path which passes through a stream, its a perfect bbq spot, just out of the wind, even on the wildest days. on the other side, mam-tor. take a short walk up towards the mass but keep low and explore the small caves.
