There is a car park on the shore overlooking Arran which regularly has campers overnighting in it, there may be some noise however from "boy racers" who frequent the area.
Follow signs for the Arran ferry to get to the sea front and the car park is on a long stretch of road which follows the length of the bay

yes you are right, all the car parks along the north shore have restiction barriers but come into sunny saltcoats and ardrossan and there are none at all. its a shame as the north shore would be a great place to stop but it is abused by many who put their caravans there at the start of the summer and leave around october or when the council eventually move them on !!

Largs should be pretty easy to stop overnight as well along the southern end of town

hi the car park at portencross has a height barrier im afraid, but you are right it is lovely there even in the wind and rain!! Largs has some good parking areas but i am not sure about stevenston...do you mean stevenston point? if so then im afraid it is frequented by many boy racers of an evening and would not recommend it.

Aye the point shame really as it was always quiet and you get a cracking view of Arran and the south Ayrshire coast line in the morning. theres always the road from Fairlie to Dalry that has(had):D a few decent laybys in thats goodfor stopping in and should be pretty empty once it gets dark

Halfway round the bay at Saltcoats; There is a car park opposite an empty building site which has a colourful scene painted on the border boards. Overlooking the sea and Isle of Arran.

We stayed there (with one other van) last week. Our chosen spot for the night turned out to be the rendevous for the local boy racers to congregate for a couple of hours in the evening. This was of no great concern as the car park was well equipped with speed humps so if they wished to demonstrate their prowess, they were restricted to the sea-front. Otherwise they stood around and discussed cars. They were all away by 10.00pm and a peaceful night followed.

If you drive down to the front at Ardrossan there is a bloody great ferry. Drive on it and in 55 minutes later you are in wild camping heaven. Sorry. couldnt resist as on Arran right now!:)

Seriously though I did see a van in the car park overlooking the ferry dock / harbor. Dont know if he was staying all night but it looked a good spot, loads of cars parked there as well, presumably foot passengers?

Cheers

Further to my earlier post here are a couple of pics to help you identify the Saltcoats car park. This is a general view

AS I say we enjoyed a quiet night there even though we were quite close to the road. There was another PVC there too.

I stay in West Kilbride only a stones throw from here, I regularly park my car in this car park to walk my dogs on the beach but would never consider staying there over night.
A regular haunt for the boy racer brigade, not my cup of tea.

They have been doing some resurfacing work in the two north shore car parks recently and the height restrictions have been removed and it doesn't look like they are going to be put back up.
So happy camping with great views of Arran.
