We are travelling to the Algarve from Calais 6th December, and hope to stop in or around Rouen on the first night, and need somewhere to stop that is easy to find, and more importantly safe. This is our first trip to Europe in our recently purchased motorhome - and advice would be greatly appreciated.:)

Hi.. Envy you heading to Portugal for the winter. We did it a couple of years ago and it was fabulous. We have always used aires in France and there are a few near Rouen. Don't use the ones on the motorways as they can be unsafe. If you haven't got a book on aires there is an online directory CAMPINGCAR-INFOS (http://www.campingcar-infos.com) which you can search either by Department or town. It's a French site but even I can understand it with my limited school French! Hope this helps. Happy Hols! Sue

if you use a tomtom sat nav you can download all the aires as a poi and then they are easy to find. failing that you can either buy the french aires book from vicarious books BUT there are lots of errors in the book or buy an aires book when you are the otherside of the water

You could do worse than the aire at Cleres on the D6, about 15 miles N of Rouen with a train service into the city. There is free electricity, with a bit of competition for a hook-up, and water, parking for C. 20 vans and it is a small village with a market and Spar type shop. There are always at least 5 vans there and no problems at all security-wise. If flamingoes are your thing, there's even a park specialising in them nearby!

We were down that way in August. We found a large Aire in the centre of Rouen by the river, loads of vans but we decided we didnt really like it. Too busy and I wouldnt have felt safe leaving the van there, probably ok for an overnight but may be noisy. Attached pic with the car on the boat is from the aire.

about 15 miles west (make sure you are south of the river) there is a lovely little Aire at La Mailleray Sur Seine right on the river. Quiet little village. There is a charge though, I think its 5 Euros. (pic attached, view from back of van) Tokens required for services available in town

If you really want to get away from it and probably be on your own there is a great free Aire at Gisay La Courde which is basically one house and a Marie. Really really rural and quiet around here but some nice countryside and villages to see. Very safe. There were a couple of vans when we were there but I imagine in September you will have it all to yourself. Tokens required for services available at restaraunt up road (see pic by the pond of Aire)

The TomTom POI are worth downloading, set them to ping when your within half a mile of an Aire and your loo will never be full or your water tank empty!

Have fun!
