Most of the few sites that are open over the Xmas madness are booked solid, I am ringing asite in Cheadle (Staffs) in the morning as they have a rally field to see what they charge.... will post tomorrow eve.

the reason i rate this place is because not only is it cheep but it has all the facilities you could want
and it's waking distance to pubs and restaurants...(many) :)
and... to top it all... a great centre to go sightsee from

and the proximity of the sheep of course :p
downside is... top field pitches are on a slight slope :o
but..pitches 1 to 9 are perfect for motothomes ;)

also happy to do betws... this 1...Riverside Touring Park | Caravan sites in Conwy, Wales | The Caravan Club (http://www.caravanclub.co.uk/caravanclubapps/applications/uk%20sites/Site%20Details.aspx?csid=21966)

TBH this looks as good a place as any for a few days at xmas. Its going to be dark at 4pm anyways. The pub looks to be about 1/2 mile at most away
LL21 9BD - Google Maps (http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=LL21+9BD&sll=53.800651,-4.064941&sspn=12.635315,35.683594&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=Corwen,+Clwyd+LL21+9BD,+United+Kingdom&ll=52.982576,-3.318579&spn=0.003139,0.0128&t=h&z=17)

The main thing (IMHO) is to check the site is open and can accomodate us, someone needs to take the bull by the horns or it aint going to happen.

Hi Polly.
I used to go to Carrog every other weekend and it is a nice spot and the Grouse offers great food. (the wine is rubbish and too expensive)
Good walking area and very nice as by the river Dee:)
The site has plenty of hard standings, although not level and blocks will be required.
There are toilets and a toilet dump but no showers or M/H waste disposal.
You just have to carry the grey water in a bucket to the waste. No problem at all.

Do you know if the pub is child friendly?
It is a very small pub with only a small bar, a pool room and a eating room, although you can eat in any of the 3 rooms.
Kids are ok as long as not in the bar.:)
There is also an outside terrace.

It has electric, hard standings, (more than enough of both) water, toilet waste disposal, & toilets.
The only things that it does not have is showers (we use our van):D and drive over grey water waste (we use a bucket at this site):D
By the way, we are booked onto a Caravan Club site with all singing, all dancing facilities:o:eek: but we have been wondering if we should change to Carrog as much cheaper and nearer to home. We have spent 3 New Years there in the past. Nice & Quiet and no fireworks if taking a dog:D

So long as it has leckie so we can run the electric heating for 3 days ;) we can live without the showers (the one in the van is fine for a couple of days) and disposal, we normally use a separate waste tank on sites anyway.

It would be good to meet you Grath

If the majority is to give it a go then this will do us.

I have been contemplating offering this for sometime.

We are a small village pub (look at the area on google LU7 9DP) near to Whipsnade Zoo (5 miles) and in excellent walking country, flat for us old fogies but near to Ivinghoe Beacon for the younger, fitter lot. I am also a keen golfer and would love to take anyone to an excellent course (provided you pay the green fees).

We could fit about 8 mhs in the car park and I am fairly sure we could rig up hook-ups. We have toilets available (24hour) and waste disposal.

It would be free providing you eat with us, anyone want a sample menu send pm and I will email in word format.

The reason I am offering this is all the locals are off skiing (rich *****) over the New Year, so her and I will be looking gormlessly at each other.

If anyone is interested drop me a pm and I'll send you the email and phone number. If not, bear us in mind for next year, Cheers, Alan and Norma.

Thanks for the offer Pokerking, not sure if anyone will take you up on this as its a long way south for some of the northern people. But I would post yourself in the Pub Stopovers if you are happy for people to park overnight for the price of a couple of pints or a meal.

We still don't know what we are doing as we are booked on at Baltic Wharf (booked nearly a year ago) sad hey:o but Carrog is a good alternative for us as not too far and we know it well:)
No promises at this stage but if we do go we won't be arriving until 27th December, and we would probably stay for the New Year.
The Steam Train runs fro Carrog to Llangollen with a couple of stations in-between, you can walk some of it to burn off that Christmas fat:D
Bala Lake is about 20 to 30 minutes away and Betwesycoed is about 30 minutes drive away.
If anybody needs showers they are available at a sports centre swimming pool on the outskirts of Llangollen. I am sure that David or his site Managers Dawn & Les could give anybody directions.
Not forgetting the Mountain walking or should I say Hill walking, but it really does feel like a mountain when you are going up it. The walk starts from behind the Grouse and goes up and up:eek:

Thanks for sorting this Andy - I have just made our email booking and am waiting for David to confirm.

We too are booking for 24th-26th with an option for 27th. :D

We usually do a luxury goods indoor picnic for our Xmas lunch - lobster  and deli meats and stuff as usually pubs etc charge too much.

Looking forward to it.

Yep the pub will still be open. Depending on the weather and how things are going we might still be around but can't commit to it at the moment, thats a long time without a full size shower, its ok in summer but in winter with 2 kids you cab imagine the mud and mess and how many changes of clothes they need

Someone on here a while ago said you only need a mountain stream or snow to clean yourself up a bit, and here we have a pub and it looks like you can dangle the kids from a rope on the balcony to give them a bath in the river!:D
Don't fancy the mountain stream or snow bit in this cold weather, but as Grath said, showers are to be had if needed at the sport centre.
Hopefully with the hard standings you won't encounter to much mud, having said that, one or two members will certainly remember the "White House Farm" meet earlier in the year, still scraping the mud off the tyres.

Happy Camping:)

LOL, I would hazard a guess its a long time since or perhaps you have never had a 7 year old boy :)
This is the last outing, he managed to find plenty of muddy puddles in a hardtopped carpark. The sports centre sounds ok though, lets hope its open over the xmas period.

We would not want him any other way, we can't stand the fat sit on the soffa stay clean society we have these days. I grew up in much the same way as my son is doing now. IOHO it makes for well rounded healthy kids both mentally and physically.

Thanks Polly, we have a shower :) we will be fine for 3-4 days. In winter it becomes a problem if the weather is bad, we quickly run out of clean dry clothes. We can't keep em locked in so they just go out and get wet and muddy which is fine. Lets hope the weather is good :)

I can't imagine how travellers manage to be in Caravans during the winter with 3-4 children, its a nightmare with just 2

Your more than welcome to come round (probably fit a couple of MH's on the drive) but as for the whiskey I never leave home without it :D:D Need to go back to Andorra where a litre bottle of Grants cost 4 euro's & that was with a glass  on my last bottle :( of some Bells the wife got from Asda but that was on offer for a tenner a litre. Kids usually buy me some for Christmas so that should last me until I head south in Feb.

Hi Polly,
not got any dates yet, but we will join you all at some stage for a couple of days at Carrog, then Betws y Coed for a night, then thinking of the Anglers Rest at Miller Dale, that's recently come up as a pub stopover for New Year Eve.
Private Buffet taking place at the Anglers Rest, but we are invited, and they will do a dinner if we let them know numbers attending.
Anyone interested for New Year, let me know asap.

Bill.

Just looked at the Anglers on google earth, there's a great big carpark, looks a bit like white hardcore, which can be a bit cacky in the bad weather, but we should be ok, it will be 4" deep in snow then, won't it?
If you google Anglers Rest, there seems to be mixed coments about the place, but mostly good ones.

I think Graham was right to point out the noise factor at Betws y coed, being in a deep valley noise travels very well:eek: and for that reason I usualy park over on the other side from the "French looking Aires" on the tarmaced car park next to the coach park, due to the noise from our Erbaspacher heater exhaust, and this is nothing like a Genny running at full bore, quiet type or not. Also you can see the MH from the pub door:D
Hope to see you at Carrog Grath.

Happy Camping:)

Hi Polly
Forcast is certainly to warm up from xmas day onwards. We hope everyone can make it but we won't take any risks, there will always be another time !!!

For those that don't know the campsite is not far off the A5 which is one of the main routes into and out of wales so if any road is clear and well gritted this one will be. We intend to stick on the Motorways and main road even if it takes a little out of the way.

Weather forcast is here

Hi All,

I have spoken to the landlady at the Anglers Rest about the New Years Eve do.
The pub will be open until 3pm, possibly all day, then at the evening bash, the buffet will start at 9pm at a cost of £3 each.

Not really knowing numbers attending, I said a possible 10 people would attend, if it's any different exccessively then I can ring later in the week.

On the car park, she would like the vans to be parked alongside a wall by the post box, to leave room for regulars and locals.

They have had a small amount of snow, but the roads are open at the moment.

Regards,
Bill.

Well I have just been and filled up with diesel and gas. (tommorow is always busy), so thats it we are ready to head off on Boxing Day.

Anyone who goes today / tommorow and finds they have forgotten something then please.........do let us know so that we can have a bloody good laugh at you :D

and then message us we will get it if we can ;)

Just looked at the Anglers on google earth, there's a great big carpark, looks a bit like white hardcore, which can be a bit cacky in the bad weather, but we should be ok, it will be 4" deep in snow then, won't it?

As the the one that set this particular hare running, I can advise that the car park is tarmac.

Maybe you were looking at the wrong car park?

The car park is immediately on the other side of the road from the pub.

I cannot make it unfortunately as I have a prior NYE invitation elsewhere.

But I can assure you that it's a very friendly, warm and welcoming pub - and I think that you'll find that the portions of food are generous.

Have a great time, and Happy Xmas to all.

Freezing weather like this is a bugger for ruining batterys. If the battery is on its last legs a few freezing nights will usually kill it off :) Lets hope you can get it going tommorow Polly, once its running it should charge the battery :)

Those that can should keep the battery on a trickle charger over winter. We take ours to Tescos evey Saturday if we are not out. Its enough to keep the engine and battery in good condition.

..think it was boxing day we went for a walk.... still just the 5 of us...someone said corwen was just a mile down the roads...so off we went

upwards and onwards..over the Dee bridge... (peepee threatened to throw himself off it... i recall the deadly silence to this day).

http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d86/pmms/carrog%20xmas%20ny%2009/IMGP3358.jpg

mrs chrissiewissy has 3 critters she brought with her...
2 were cross terriers with a rat..(1 was very very cross, most of the time).. and a shiatsu/pug cross.
this is a recognised breed apparently known as a pug****.

well.. pug**** knew which side it's bread was buttered and it wasn't roaming with the 2 terrats .. oh noÖ so the little sheeeit tethered itself to me for protection for the remainder of the day..

below you see peepee confirming that corwen is in fact just 9 inches down the road.

http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d86/pmms/carrog%20xmas%20ny%2009/IMGP3362.jpg

well... almost..

see... terrats on pieces of string...not enough meat on them to make a decent curry

http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d86/pmms/carrog%20xmas%20ny%2009/IMGP3379.jpg

ahh... 2 and a 1/2 miles later..(the lying little sheeeet) and a good hours walk we come to corwen... within seconds of this shot we were in the pub for some light refreshments before taking the shorter route (A5) back to carrog.

Funny you never mentioned getting beaten at Pool:D ;) by a woman:D

More info from the Anglers Rest at Millers Dale, the landlord Graham tell's me that he as a septic tank in the middle of the car park that we can use, and if we require water, he will run out a long hosepipe for us. What a great couple of people the owners are and thanks to them for a great reception at the meet.
We certainly will be back, leave the pogo sticks at home next time:D

Happy Camping:)

Using Picasa web,

The border to the right of the picture you select has a link button, click and copy the http and paste on your reply.

Hope that makes sense, be careful it doesn't give access to any private pics though.

Derek.
