:rolleyes:Last year we had a great meet at Whitehouse farm site near Doncaster, this seemed to launch the season and a good few friendships......;). It also seems this is when the Malt appreciation wing of this site had its first tasting... (gulping...if you were Aj) session.
However the field was in a terrible state and a few got well and truly bogged in.
It would be great to carry on this season opening meet as being 1/2 term it can involve those with........ offspring things:eek:
So has anyone got a suggestion for a site .... fairly central and reasonably priced.... or do we go for whitehouse farm again?

if the vote is for this far north then i guess this is where we must go, maybe I can syphon some diesel out of the locals cars to get home . (Note to self take length of hosepipe)

We would come up from the Wednesday if the site and location are good enough (and cheap enough). Kids playground looks good at the first site and the price is right but if its a bog then no good

Like Aj, said what about zeezee's place at Ribblehead, it's cheap (free) and it's on a pub car park. Plenty walks in the area, kids can play with the sheep, and look after Grandaddy, sorry I meant Aj, he loves kids really, ask biggaraffe's kids, little Joe, and sorry can't remember her name now:eek:
At least it's not on a muddy field, but then little Joe likes MUD;)

Happy Camping:)

It looks nice but tt is also rather pricy, + £1 for a dog, +1.50 for a child, makes it about £20 per night incl EHU for us.

Anyone got anywhere in the peak district?

Went to Monsal Head Friday night, plenty of room, very quite, just 2 vans there. Not bad for 20p per night.
The pub's a bit dear, but it has some good ales, and a good variety of food.
Stayed at Cromford Basin saturday night, again, very quite and just 2 vans again. 10 mins walk into the village, shops, fish shop, an olde worlde diy/ironmongers shop with everything you could think of,(I bought 4 genuine BINGO PENS for Croft). A couple of good pubs too.
There is plenty of room in the Basin carpark, toilets open until 10pm, an ideal place for a meet next year.
Cheers, Pete

Hi All,
Pete just rang in from Weston super Mare, he says Ribblehead would be to small for the meet anyway, and maybe the Pub owner might not like so many vans, but he suggested the above at Cromford Basin for a meet.
Aj will be along with a map shortly, he's good at that:D;)

Regards,
Bill.

What about this place. Its not far from the motorway M6. good place and has a pub on site.

- Wyreside Lakes & Fisheries - Home (http://www.wyresidelakes.co.uk/component/option,com_frontpage/Itemid,1/)

We stayed here last year and it was very good, with some hardsatnding but the field is also good with EHU never gets boggy so im told as its on an old gravel quarry and has good drainage. They also have a field for rallies. Hope this helps some.

We had a meet here in Jan 2008, a lovely spot but whwn you add up the parking fees fo the day and night, you are nearly up to site fees and no hook up.
The Leek camping and carravanning club site is open all year and ther are a few CLs nearby?

But that said it fine for us :)

Does anyone know of any good wilding spots in the area as I might take holiday and we might go up a couple of days earlier if the weather is good?

I use this site loads during the winter ,I did all my Christmas shopping in Leek, about 40 mins walk or 5 mins on the bus (which stops outside the site, but only 3 a day) . The three horseshoes is a 7 minute walk away. Tittesworth reservoir has a great walk around it 4 miles and has a visitor centre and cafe that does hot food. The Roaches, a great rocky faultline provides excellent walking and climbing is 15 minutes away. Its only fault...... the site that is.... is that it is near to a fairly busy road, so is a bit noisy but after sinking a couple of bottle of AJ's malt,;):p, that should not be a problem.
If you are into this ... we ought to book as it is a popular site.

Just checked the site and they still have availability so I am booking now £16.60 for 2 nights single age concession.

Non members welcome

Cromford might have been a little cheaper.
The camping & caravaning club is only cheap for members that are on their own. Non members pay a premium and members with families pay more than a single member

Partly my point, whilst we can adopt the mantra sticking to the rules means we dont do anything, (grath) and the fact indiscretions arent enforced, fingers crossed the councils/residents ignore our presence. I cant help but feel a shortsighted attitude in the grander scale.

There are people on this site ( not me )working tirelessly to promote to local councils that motorhomers bring benefits to the local economy. We dont litter, are responsible and are a benefit not a hinderance.

Does the foc you syndrome do as I want not undermine attempts to have us recognised ?

We strive for a situation similar to that in France, Aires that allow us to enjoy our pastime adding benefit to the local community if only by injecting a little cash into the local economy.

But if we selectively choose to ignore things has they stand what message does this send to those who aren't motorhomers ? Foc you Jack we will do as we wish and foc the consequences ? More to the point how does our actions impact upon those in a position to grant us our wish?

Just perhaps a couple of points worthy of consideration to safeguard and promote our collective pastime going forwards?

I did my bit as the last time that I went there I did inject cash into the local economy as I spent well over £100 ( about £130) in the local mill and on top of that more dosh in the local pub.
I am sure that the local plods and council officials are well aware that we (as motorhomers) do add to the local economy and that is why they turn a blind eye to our parking:)
I will carry on as I have always done and park where I feel safe and I will add to the economy at places that I am welcome:)
Places that I am not made welcome will not get my hard earned money:D

edit
What I can't stand are the cheap skates that park and don't feed the parking meters:eek:
Seen it many times at places like Betwesycoed:(
Better to feed the meter and pay your way, then hopefully no one will have need to complain:)

Perhaps Channa, But in my mind it all depends what the council (or owners) original reason for the limit was, if it was as I suspect to prevent commercial vehicles being parked then I doupt as Grath has pointed out that they will have a problem.

There is also a case I think that by using this space responsibly that we are proving that there is need in this town for a 'legal' parking area for Motorhomes. If we are reckless and make too much noise leave a mess etc then I agree we are doing our cause no good at all.

IMHO history is littered with examples where people had to break the law to prove that the law is an ass. You can spend your whole life waiting for what you consider to be right to happen and die a disappointed man sometimes you just have to get on and live your life regardless :)

I thank you Channa for promoting our cause i wish more people did, perhaps there is a chance here to contact the local council and plead our case and point out the money we have already spent and see if the council will change the restriction to exclude MH's. After all what would the councils position be 'I wish to stop these MH owners from parking quietly in our carpark then spening money in the local shops and pubs. But then again will bringing the fact it is used to their attention will result in them enforcing the restriction already in place, I leave you to decide that one my friend :)

BTW perhaps we can take this to a new thread and leave this one clear for the meeting :D

As I thought we are getting a fair response, and I am looking forward to seeing you all after so long.
I think with these sort of numbers we need to be on a site, as those ataying 2/3 days with limited facilities need to have the conveniences of a site.
Cromford is great for a night ....or two if you arrive latish on the first day but as it is half term if 8/10 vans are on the carpark it might cause us a few probs, if the council wardens see the same vans from Friday lunchtime to Sunday afternoon.
I hope we can have an overnight there before the season starts proper.

Arrived here at Leek site about an hour ago, It is snowing lightly.....not worth the bother really, stopped at Morrisons bought some value bread and baked beans for A.J to live on..:D and abottle of cooking and as Glenlivet 12 yr old was on offer a bottle of that to go with the thimble full of Jura, (for A.J) and the thimble full of Bowmore, (for A.J ) and the Ledaig, still unopened:eek:, for the rest of us. Noticed some nasty value sausages, all pink and yuky..... so if someone can pick up some of those then we will have a feast to give A.J. while we eat heartilly. Spent £65, in the bl***in place and still forgot bog roll, cookin OILand washing up liquid....... so will have to walk in, in the morning and spend more dosh....... If that A.J. pulls a face at our generousity.... then he can take us to the Three horseshoes and buy us a round.
See you all Friday........... where's that Glenlivet.:D

weather report from Leek CC site as of 15.45 hours Thursday 18th February 2010;

The effects of the anti cyclone @ 992 mb, centred off Brittany and another centred over Shetland, have brought thick cloud cover over the site, intermittent light snow flurries will continue, however these are very light in nature and we do not forsee any build up of precipitation. Temperatures stand currently at 1 degree celcius after achieving a high of 3 celcius at 11 this morning.
The oulook for the rest of the day is for winds to remain very light but some lightening of the cloud cover is expected, temperatures will fall after dark to -3 celcius and the night will be misty, the threat of further snow showers is minimal and skies in the morning should be a little clearer enabling views toward the Roaches better than today.
Weather reports from Millers Dale however remain behind the Bar.
