Mid week Christmas Special 20-22 November 2018
Many of you will remember our last visit to Botany Bay, and how much fun it was.
I have just had a chat with Jerry North, the General Manager of Botany Bay and he is delighted that we are considering a return visit.
For those who prefer Coordinates; N53.66686 W002.62004. (Digital Format)
Approach from Junction 8 on M61 and turn East on A674.
At next roundabout turn Right into Botany Bay.
Go past two car parks on Right, past the Mill, past the Helicopter Pad and park in the Óverflow Carpark.
There is NO vehicle access from Blackburn Brow.
Botany Bay Shopping Mill is housed within the old Canal Mill which is over 150 years old. The building itself has a long and illustrious history built originally for the cotton industry but now home to Lancashire's big brand outlet.
Canal Mill was built in 1855 during the Crimean War when Lancashire cotton industry was at the forefront of cotton manufacturing. The mill opened in 1856 and was built for Richard
Smethurst a pioneer in the Chorley cotton industry.
After Richard Smethurst’s death in 1860, the mill was sold to William and Charles Widows who were business associates of the Smethurst’s family. In the early 1860’s disaster struck the Lancashire cotton industry when “The Cotton Famine”, which was the result of the American Civil War, meant that supplies of raw cotton were not reaching the Lancashire Mills, it appears Canal Mill was no exception as it ceased production in 1861.
On the approach to Christmas, they convert the top floor of the building into the most fabulous 'Grotto', selling many unusual and quirky Christmas presents, ideal for that 'someone special'.
We had to limit numbers last time to around a dozen vans but, this year he is happy for twice as many.
Camping will be free for the duration of our stay, but by way of return, we are expected to (at the very least) spend some time browsing through the many and varied Retail Outlets housed in Botany Bay.
Please also remember that it will be late November, and very cold. Come prepared!
NO SERVICES are provided, and we are expected to be self-sufficient in most respects please.
Security will open the barriers to the Approach Road at 7am each morning and close them again at 7pm.
If you wish to arrive outside of these hours it is imperative that you let me know please.
I have been asked to remind you to display your ‘W’ stickers, in order to make life easier for Security.
Restaurants, Coffee shops & Cafe Chorley Lancashire - Botany Bay
There will be lots to see and do, and I would urge you, if the idea appeals, to put your names down soon to avoid disappointment.
Obviously, more details will be posted throughout the year.
A small amount of building materials, have recently been stored, close to where we will camp. This material may have to be transported to a building site, at some point, during our stay.
Botany Bay management would like to extend sincere apologies, if we are inconvenienced in any way.
I have today had a chat with Leslie, who is the landlady of The Lock and Quay PH, BotanyBay, and asked her if we could all come for an evening meal on Tuesday 20th November at 6pm.
The kitchen is normally closed on Tuesdays but she said that she would be happy to open it for a group booking.
It would be to our advantage to eat together on Tuesday as there should be plenty of seating available as its normally Cooks 'day off'.
I have told her to provisionally expect a couple of dozen people, but she understands that this may change as the date approaches, and I will keep her informed in good time.
*** Now that we have an idea of how many folk would like to attend, I have spoken to Leslie, who is delighted but concerned about catering for so many at the same time.
We both feel that the only workable solution, is to offer a restricted menu and to try to get as many advanced orders as possible.
Please order your Evening Meal here Mid Week Christmas Specal** FOOD ORDERS HERE PLEASE- FROM THIS MENU**
It would be ideal if we can tell Leslie our orders about ten days in advance.
I look forward to hearing from you.
I have provisionally booked a Canal Cruise for Wednesday 21st from 2pm - 4pm
The cost has risen slightly to £12 per person and would include a Hotpot Lunch or Vegetable Lasagne.
The onboard Bar would also be available.
The maximum number of seats allowed on the boat is 60.
PLEASE let me know if you fancy this option here:-
I will keep you all up to date, as possibilities arise.

Was about to say yes then checked calendar, I work Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday so will have to miss it
Don't Worry, Be Happy
Are we supposed to guess where it is?
I'm presuming it's not the one in Oz & there's more than one in the UK.
Sorry Sharon, Yes it is the one near Chorley, as indicated by Tezza33.
I'll post more details a bit nearer the time, but generally speaking, its a lot of fun. A chance to do a bit of present browsing, for that someone special!
We also get to have a bit of fun on the canal and in the local pub, I cant guarentee about any wine tasting this year but, you never know..... anything could happen?????
