When I was a lad the local sandstone church was burnt out and the diocese to demolish the church and clear the site.
Bids were invited for the site clearance and a local business man got the job with an offer far lower than his competitors.
He installed a wooden hut and put up a sign advertising rockery stone at very cheap prices. "Help yourself - shilling a wheelbarrow/ 5 bob a car load / 10 bob other vehicles"
An OAP was employed to collect the sales money.
The site was not secured and a lot of stone disappeared overnight by people too tight to pay even the cheap price being offered.
At the end of the job the site was tidied up in a single day using a single wagon.
The church got the job done cheap
Loads of locals built cut price rockeries
Garden centres upto 50 mile away bought lorry loads and sold at a profit
The OAP got a few bob for doing not a lot.
The businessman got richer
Of course these days H&S would not let this happen.
