I don't know how but the guy who tarts up the bodywork on my van always reminds me that he can get me an mot should it fail at my regular garage. Maybe one day, but so far she's passed legitimately.
If you are of the mindset garages are biased on MOTs the answer in many places is to use your local councils facility where pass/ fail and any remedial work they don't undertake
We have been using our local council garage who do mot's and have just started doing repairs. They so far have done mot on berlingo and fixed minor things like bulb and wiper immediately and charged minimal amounts. Also went there at 4.30pm yesterday on spec as washers had stopped working, they fixed it on the spot and refused payment...fuse gone and pipe loose! Almost miss that sharp intake of breath when I explain what is wrong!
When we have our converted van will be taking it there as they make it all so pleasant. Actually feel I can trust them!
I use my local LGV garage for mots...
For all of our fleet (landrovers/transit Jumbo camper/swift motorhome and even my works van)
Totally trust them to test fairly... If something is a fail then it fails BUT never had them trying it on,but then they are a small family run affair and know I do all my own work (and if there is an advisory then it's repaired for the next test).
Long and short... Find a good garage and stick with them.
Father-in-law uses ................ Mot Thornton - Slaters Service Centre
Slaters Service Centre.
Red Marsh Industrial Estate.
He used to use the Ambulance Service Station for MOT but they stopped doing them and it was them who put him onto Slaters.
He`s very happy with them and their servicing / repairs costs are also very reasonable.

My local (to where I used to live) garage had a pit, which was what they used for MOTs. But this year they replaced it with a lift so they could squeeze one more bay in.
The lift that is MOT approved can't take the van: I'm not sure if it is too heavy, wide or high, but it can't. They can only used the approved equipment to do the test. So I have to go elsewhere.
Luckily, there is an MOT place just down the road which has a lift that it can go on. And it's much nearer where I live now!

My van is a LWB Renault Master which I converted myself.
Our local garage at Colsterworth has a suitable internal lift, but the damnable health and safety regulations of VOSA state that the lift ins't big enough!
So for the very same price as I would get charged at the Colsterworth garage, I arranged to meet the owner at another garage which is owned by a friend of him close to Grantham, where he duly carried out the MOT.
