the most i have ever paid for a car in my life is 1100 - and that is my current StreetKA (its a 2 seater ford fiesta with a soft-top). The van cost me 10k probably worth 2-4k more now.... i have never understood why folks spend fortunes on cars other than to boast.

    Yes, we have one
We had a new 18 plate last March and the first thing I did was replace with our private plate.
No body knew it was new
Our 9 year old car which we did buy new, passed another MOT this week. I did not expect it to fail as it only has just over 20K miles on the clock and the tester has previously told me, it is one of the cleanest he has ever seen.
Also, reinsured with I hate to say with Saga for 240, fully comp and including UK full recovery!

I recall heading out at midnight on 1st January 1976 on my 400/4. Id waited till then thinking that it would keep its value better as a 76 than a 75. Still got it 43 years later and I think that my patience has had little effect on its value.

I paid 800 for my little Honda , 53 mpg 60+ on a longish run plenty of space for me and not really swayed by having latest on the block,

New cars can make sense to lot of people, limited mechanical ability perhaps full warrantys (manufacturer backed) comprehensive breakdown cover, low rate finance deals complete breakdown and recovery. Lots of manufactrers offering deposits couple of thousand pounds in some cases, the overall effect is it can work out cheaper than something 18 months old. The twist of course is it does impact on used values.

Back in the day selling Granada Scorpios and Mercedes 190 s at auction one always had to be mindful in the Fords case what a new one could be bought for Mercedes didn't at the time discount so stronger resale, that was borne out in the fleet market where a Merc was cheaper to rent as opposed to the Ford despite having a significant higher list price,

Only winner ultimately is the manufacturers

    Yes, we have one
Incidentally, when we did get our new 18 last March, it just happened to be a coincidence!
It has a plate showing it is over 20years old

    Just had an expensive month.

I recall back in the 80's, Car Dealers used to have big "New Reg" parties and there was a stream of folk driving away after midnight in their spanking new cars.

I heard that is was always a bad time to pick up a new car just on new-reg day as the PDIs tended to be skimped due to time constraints and workload.

Only time I have 'owned' a brand new car was when it was actually a company car - they just loose too much money driving off the forecourt IMO - usually gone for nearly new/demos less than 6 month old (current one bought at 4 months old and was registered the day before the Road Tax rules changed - so costs 30/yr instead of the 140/yr it would be for the same car 1 day newer)

Used to buy a new car every 2 or 3 years, and not lose money.
My time in Germany with BFG, meant we could buy tax free, and two/three years later sell it on.
My aim was not to make money, which I did not, but to have a new car each time.
