Hi. Passing here tomorrow, has anybody gone down the road to Lysebotn in a coachbuilt MH? Thinking about a diversion down and up for the sheer pleasure of it??!! Any feedback welcome...plus ideas of where best to stay overnight down there.

Looks a bit difficult if you meet something as big

Well despite the grim weather we went for it. 32 hairpin bends are packed tightly down a narrow ramp which cuts diagonally down the sheer sides of the Fjord, dropping some 950m in the process. Towards the bottom the ramp fizzles out and the road plunged into a tunnel cut in the cliff to accommodate two steep ramps and an underground hairpin! At the top is a big carpark and a viewpoint cafe hanging over the edge. However at 40kr just to stop and 200kr to stay all day...we gave it a miss. Apart from the nail biting fun of the big drop, what came a a pleasant surprise was the narrow single track one way road that climbs over the mountains to the edge of the Fjord. It cuts with innumerable ups and downs and twists and turns across a geological maze of rocky outcrops, boulders and little lakes, with distant views of snow speckled mountains and occasional plunging glimpses down to the Fjord. It was even better coming back up today in the sunshine!

The hairpins are so tightly packed with such short straights between the easiest way to descend was to just stick it in first and grind slowly and steadily down at 13mph without needing the brakes at all and enjoy the scenery. Otherwise it would be none stop gear changes and braking. Coming up...second gear all the way.

For the night instead of turning left into Lysebotn, turn right at the bottom and go to the end of the valley where thereís a nice little parking space good for a few vans, with nice clean toilets adjacent...and a lot of sheep to count! Another little lay-by also on the same road. The campsite in Lysebotn is expensive and uninspiring.

My own photos didnít do the route justice (besides Iím saving my Gigabytes) however anyone interested can have a look at the Lysevegen entry on this site Lysevegen
