On the hand brake . Have they stopped pulling them up .
Question. number of clicks to pull up?

I'm not an MOT Tester;

How many clicks? Would depend on the tooth pitch on the ratchet and pawl mechanism. Finer pitch = more teeth to click before brake shoe or pad contacts disc or drum.
If the handbrake lever has to travel to the extent that there's little or no more travel left before reaching the required braking effectiveness on the brake tester read out, then it'll fail, just how far ie 50% or 75% of the lever's full travel, I don't know, I imagine it's up to the Testers discretion.

Hi band driver,

It used to be three or four, but it could be that they test it on the rolling road like the foot brakes and you have imbalance or one wheel is not locking enough but you could ask them to explain.

rear brakes

Disc s plus pads are balanced and passed 20160510_150224.jpgfront and back, But hand park brake drums 60 110

brakes are measured as a percentage efficiency so the lighter the van the higher efficiency, get the balance link copper slipped adjust the brakes and empty everything out to improve efficiency. Especially if it is a merc as they have crap handbrakes.

Yes 2.5 tonn on a rolling road will that make a difference . Should I take the spare wheel and seats out.
100 kg ? Will that up the 60:juggle:

you are looking at 16% efficiency on a handbrake, empty water, food, booze etc it will make a difference scoff all you like

Am I missing something here, I was told when I first learnt to drive never to rachete a handbrake as this would cause wear and then a possible handbrake failure. you should , and I still believe, that feel alone is sufficient.

I suppose it depends where you get your MOT done, at mine the rolling road records axle weights and calculates efficiency percentage from that and provides a print out of said figures. Giving axle and total weights and efficiency of all brakes as percentages.

If you say so, you are obviously better informed than I am, I just have the paper printouts and the explanation from the garage to go on. Either way turning up with minimum weight can do no harm

In this case the load makes no difference it won't effect a handbrake imbalance 60/110

No need to be sarcastic, I guess we should all be grateful that you invented the wheel and the handbrake.

its a simple repair just manualy adjust the self adjusters up by taking the drums off and ratchet them
up till the drum is a neat fit over the shoes. when they are adjusted it will lock the wheels solid. when
on the rollers they will lock out and pass.

I trump you there my 1987 508 MERC has just passed its mot today thats three in a row not bad for a 1987!!!!

Mine used to cick about 5 times and failed the MOT then after i got it fixed it clicked 2-3 times and passed. Not the most technical answer...

re fitted in the rain

Went to go to welders for reprice and no wheel on the thing arrrrr!
20 mins all clean & back together in the rain. Better now than 26th. Hopeing for good weekend then &
Hope to see some of you there at Rutland.

Also Went in quick fit, Booked in for free brake test this friday. With their brakes for life!

Jugmentday

Retest monday Booked @ Halfords £30 + £15 retest so £45.00 and ten days to return. Thanks Craig &Dave

Question. number of clicks to pull up?

You can ask the MOT tester for a printout of the braking effort for each wheel of your vehicle, I think I'm correct in saying as far as the foot brake goes the total cumulative braking effort kg must be at least / exceed 50% of the vehicle weight, (these days your vehicle is weighed when its on the braking rollers). MOT tester should be looking at reasonably balanced braking effort across each axle, don't know what the percentage 'difference' limit is ? + I don't know what the handbrake retardation acceptable limit is. Some older vans have a mechanical brake hydraulic proportioning valve that senses loading (rear suspension deflection) and adjusts braking effort to the back wheels to prevent lockup when lightly loaded, ABS equipped vehicle don't need this proportioning valve.

If you maintain your own vehicle check handbrake travel, 3 or 4 clicks, / cable adjustment, check any peripheral corrosion on discs / drums and within acceptable wear limits, and that friction materials are wearing evenly, has brake fluid been replaced in last two years, check acceptable vacuum being generated and sustained in the servo system by the vacuum pump (diesel) no big leaks of generated vacuum, looking for roughly 20 inches or 500mm of mercury vacuum.

Sorry to say I was recently given an MOT fail chit, (braking efficiency), and after exhaustive self checking of the braking system, (no faults found), took my vehicle to another test station, it passed, the engineer said and demonstrated, how he could adjust the braking efficiency displayed by how hard he pressed on the brake pedal ....

Hope you arrive at a satisfactory solution.

Rgrds,

Rob H.
