Jim seems to have lost a bit of his vigour over the years .... but haven't we all. Still chips in when anything 'tecchy' gets discussed.

First met Jim during a diving trip many years ago, he looked after us and organised air and boats for us.

Returned maybe three year after first trip, we had out own boat. We got called in by local polis to do a sweep search of a fresh water loch where two fishermen ended up in the water, one man made it to shore and got help, the other guy, unfortunately drowned. We never found the body, northern constabulary underwater search team did a couple of days later.

A couple of year back, found ourselves back at Lochinver, parked up at Achmelvich (love that beach) we took the hill walk over to Lochinver, had a wander around, then into the old fisherman mission for a bite to eat, which was a humungas fish and chips. By the time we finished our grub, we were burst and in no fit state for the long walk back.

Long story short, time was 14.30 hours, asked lady at FM if there was an available taxi, yes but commenced 18.00 hours. I left Mrs R and the dug at the FM, I then went for a wander, I asked around for Jim and was more or less outside his unit, went in, had a blether, with Jim asking where we were staying and, said awaiting taxi for run back to Achmelvich. Jim shut up shop and drove us back to the bay. He wouldn't take a bean for his kindness , so paid in coffee beans as we sat outside in the sun.

Jim gave me his address, where I sent him pictures of him alongside us bunch of wreck ferrets.

Jim Crooks, a gem of a guy and, a damn good marine engineer.

The value of a man should be seen in what he gives and not in what he is able to receive.
