Why do most people on this forum use pseudonyms rather than using their own names?

I would imagine so that they can retain some anonymity.

I would not put my full name online, as there are some people I would rather not trace me. The main reason for this being, I simply do not like them.

If folk used their real names they could be tracked across all social media.
Would be possible to capture enough info for identity theft.
Would also require people to be civil & polite when posting. Heaven forbid.

Anonymity can be a great thing.

    In my early days working in an IT department, my mate took a call during a particularly busy time on a night shift. The conversation went something like this;

Jim "Allo, what do you want?"

    Caller "I beg your pardon?"

Jim "Look mate, I'm busy, what do you want?"

Caller "Do you realise who you are talking to?"

    Jim "No"

Caller "This is Les Williams, Senior manager IT operations"

Jim "And do you realise who you are talking to?"

    Caller "No"

Jim "Well that's a f***ing good job then!"

And promptly put down the phone.
    Adventure before...... something or other.

I'm a member of a large angling forum where real names have to be used.To join, members have to purchase an item from the forum shop and give their name and address.
It certainly makes a difference to the general tone of the forum, there is virtually no trolling. I put that down to the fact that they can be traced, unlike on here where the occasional troll/keyboard warrior can hide behind the anonymity of a pseudonym.
