my daughter's mate just got away from a fire up at St Marcos, by the Santa Clara barragem- lost all the vehicles and property around the house, but the house was saved by the bombeiros' accurate helicopter water bombing ! apparently a neighbour decide it was a nice hot day to do a bit of angle grinding on his motorbike . daughter's moved her old single decker bus to a nearby lake so they'll have something to live in if the house is lost

Hope their home has escaped! Trouble is that a lot of the land is owned by people working or living away in France, Brazil etc. It will regrow Eucalyptus from the roots and pines spring up from cones after the fires and nobody stops it. These trees are evolved to regenerate after fires. We keep our land clear but are bordered by areas which are let grow anyhow.

We could see and smell the smoke from our house in Penamacor 70 miles from the fires.
It is beyond horrific what must have happened to these poor people.
Portuguese government has banned any planting of Eucalyptus since last month but too late, should have been done years ago.

We were wondering if the ban on planting eucolyptus trees will actually stop anyone cos the blooming things sprout several new saplings from burned ones! So many will not need to "plant" new trees.. hopefully though the fire will have scared some into planting deciduous trees instead. There are a lot of absentee landowners so their land may well just regrow eucy's.

    eucalyptus trees

eucs - they're like a horrible fast growing weed, sucking up all the water in the ground and stopping everything else from growing , popular for roof timbers, but i've seen 200mm thick timbers snap in 2 with no warning, and as firewood it burns well, but you need to clean your flue at least once a fortnight. noisy in the wind too, with all the strands of bark banging about. the one big thing in their favour- mosquitoes don@t like them, so park under one for a quiet night !
