This was on a watchdog program the one with Angela Rippon a couple of months ago , the fact is ythey can charge what they want it is unregulated in the programme someones daughter had ran up 300 worth via vodaphone

The thing to remember is apps are for ever updating themselves and simple things like google maps are tracking where you are ,,,you can check settings on most phones

I play on the safe side and technophobe phone gets switched off that way I know nothing in the background is using data.

i did not realise that Irish Ferries small notice that "phone calls may cost more than your normal rate" meant a HUGE amount more than my normal rate.

After i had made my call my supplier sent me a text telling me about "maritime communications". Apparently they charge " 7.80 per minute for phone calls 25p per text Data 3 per megabyte MMS 0.45p per message for Maritime Standard Calls. I cannot find anywhere on their website what the maritime charges are.

After i got this text i spoke to several other ferry passengers and they explained that if i used the phone close to land and could pick up the signal from a land mast the cost was the same as in UK. But if i was in the middle of the irish Sea satellite connection was the only way to make a call and it became a Maritime Call and my supplier could charge what they liked.

Other passengers' suppliers maritime charges ranged from 2+ to 5+ per minute.

it will probably take a couple of weeks before i can look online at my October bill to see if i have been charged this.

    So .... take care everyone....

    more later
Hope your bad news was balanced out somewhat by having had a good time in Ireland...

Aeroplane mode for me as soon as on the ferry. I think they have cell buoys that pick up your signal.

But did get caught out in Asia, in a similar way when turning on the phone to connect to hotel WiFi, it was still had roaming on so as soon as it booted up went straight to setting and turned it off. But Not quick enough, and it roamed data. 5 minimum charge for a few seconds off data.

How much does it cost for calls to Satellite phones?
Calls to satellite numbers cost the same per minute regardless of where in the world you are when making the call (whether from the
UK or abroad) or where the satellite phone is physically located. They normally start with the number prefix 0087 or 0088 and cost
    up to 7.66 per minute.
