On the news here, by all accounts Michelin are involved in attempting to find re employment for its workforce

Whilst that is a good thing, I do feel for those who stand a real threat of financial insecurity with rents and mortgages and the realistic defaults they face

Sadly as they will find out access to benefits that assist to getting back in work are not a walk in the park despite what the press would have you believe

    Yes, we have one
Stoke is to stay open, but over the years the workforce there has substantially reduced.
Don't forget Michelin is a French Company and French look after French.
    Not forgetting Burnley previously closed!

French looking after themselves, but who can call them for that.

I remember years ago when the Stoke factory was booming, two french trucks would come over loaded full of tyres. They would unload one, then back to back the trailers and swop the load to the other trailer, then reload the empty trailer with the tyres previously unloaded from the other trailer.
In other words, totally swop loads!
Then toddle back to France with the same tyres they had came across with!
Obviously a BIG tax advantage or whatever!

The points the general manager raised yesterday morning were competition from cheaper Chinese imports and the fact the factory can only make 16" and smaller tyres and more and more cars run bigger diameter tyres now. So why did the Scottish Government and Michelin invest in the factory within these parameters? I noticed the 16" part has been cut from reruns of the interview with him. All very sad that generations of families will be redundant without a lot of prospects. Lot of money to take out of the community with the added knock on of other businesses which will suffer as well

Presumably we the buying public are as much to blame as anyone for buying cheap none UK tyres in favour of cheaper imports. At least the "B" word hasn't been mentioned yet.

If our government had the same attitude towards the people who voted them into their high wage jobs, this country wouldn't be the shithole it's turned into.

    Big blow to any town.

In Barrow our shipyard has gone from around 11,000 to less than 4,000 and back up to in excess of 10,000 in about thirty years. It's the kids that will be most affected with apprenticeships and other training walking away.

    Not good at all.

    Cheers
