The building inspector called on Friday to check the steel beams are the right size and sitting on pads stones as specified. The inspector knows our builder well and obviously has trust in his work, as we do, the inspector was at our house for no longer than 3 minutes.
This morning we received an invoice for 455.99 for the inspection plus one further vist which I assume will also be no longer than 3 minutes.
I have just queried the invoice with the local council, they informed me it is correct.

Not a bad little earner if you can get it!

Did you ask how much time he had recorded for the visit?

And why should they invoice you now for a visit in future?

No I didn't think to ask, may call them back later with just those points.

Our bridge inspectors work out at about 80 quid per bridge (including the report and pics).

I'm 10 years out of touch with having to have building works inspections, but two suggests to me just an extension? The price may well be a standard charge and you're just unlucky to have it applied to small works.

I think you are probably correct. Last time we did work that required building regs I lumped lots of smaller jobs on one application to keep the costs down.
    Still expensive though.

I had an inspection of a steel beam years ago, took about 2 minutes for a quick glance then he was off. It could have been made of plywood for all he knew, never even touched it.
