At the news coming out of Christchurch in NZ in what appears to be a white supremacist attack on two mosques. 49 dead, 20+ seriously injured.

Saw it on the news this morning.

Dreadful,...., and the kind of place you don't think would have such problems.

The NZ prime minister summed it up perfectly, unfortunately I can't upload the link from YouTube.

A soft target and shocking attack on a peaceful nation.
The value of a man should be seen in what he gives and not in what he is able to receive.

I was shocked to read that headline this morning and I know how the people of Chch must be feeling and I also have some family there,it took me straight back to the Aramoana massacre in 1990,everyone in Dunedin knew someone that died that day. From what I've read in the paper the gunman originally was going to target my hometown of Dunedin, but decided Chch was a better target.
It's a big hit for Chch which is still recovering from the affects of the earthquake that mostly destroyed it,a far different place now than what it was in my youth.
On the whole NZ has always had a low rate of gun crime even though there are plenty of guns out there, laws were tightened up considerably after Aramoana,I grew up in a house full of guns with easy access but they are required to be kept in a gun safe with access only by the registered keeper. I'm not sure how an Australian national would get access to a gun unless he was a license holder which suggests he's probably lead a blameless life up till this point,a conviction of any sort usually rules out ownership.

Very sad, other side of the world but still awful to contemplate.
Our thoughts are with all affected.

Apparently the gunman live streamed the whole event and 100's of people were/are sharing it. Some sicko's were cheering the gunman on and I am saddened and shocked to hear that even some NZers were amongst them.
What is the world coming to?

NZ might be considered relatively safe but you only have to look at the gang culture over there to realise it has it's dark underbelly just like anywhere else, every town has Mongrel Mob,Manga Kaha, Black Power or bikie gang chapters,in general they leave tourists alone but innocents do get caught up in their wars at times, some places will get you stabbed just for turning up in the wrong coloured T shirt. It's easy to look at NZ thru rose tinted glasses but my experience says otherwise.
