geeze, is this a forum for ex-Borstal Boys!

There was the cane at my Grammar School. But IIRC was only allowed to be administered by the Head or Deputy Head (and only the Deputy used it).
I never got it myself as didn't tend to break the rules to do so. (there were only a few boys that got the cane and they were definate troublemakers)

sounds likes lots of you had teachers that were not fit to be left in charge of school children (so much for this talk of children needing adult supervision. seems more like need protection from adult supervision!)

I could imagine some of the ex-POWs, and especially ones in Japanese Camps would have had a tremendous fight getting back to normality

My English Teacher was ex-RAF. He was a tail-end Charlie (rear gunner) on Lancs during WW2. And he was an excellent teacher. Commanded respect from the pupils but also gave respect back. Just what you want and need from a School Teacher.

PS. And the key thing there is 'commanded' respect, not 'demanded' - there is a world of difference in the two and that is sadly misunderstood in both school and workplace.
