I have the app and scroll around for locations. Is there a search button or way to find a near town or village.

The app doesn't have a search function. As you have found you will have to scroll the map to the desired area.
As Nesting Zombie has said, try the POI Map option on the website. This uses Google Maps and you are able to search for a place name.
